I originally bought 40 Greatest Hits on vinyl and later upgraded it to CD and I was content with that collection, containing as it does all the essential tracks. However, seeing this collection at a bargain price, I decided to buy. It contains Honky Tonkin', which is the most important track omitted from the earlier collection (though not absolutely essential) but omits Weary blues from waitin', a top ten country hit. Again, that track is not absolutely essential, but I am surprised at its omission. Still, all the essential tracks are here so this is a great collection that contains all of Hank's other country hits, together with the important B-sides along with tracks that became successful via cover versions by others.
Among the less obvious tracks here, there are six early tracks that were released as singles but failed to chart (Never again, Wealth won't save your soul, My love for you has turned to hate, Pan American, On the banks of the old Pontchartrain, My sweet love ain't around). Also included are seven duets with his wife and manager, Audrey Williams, the best of which may be The pale horse and his rider. I would have liked the compilation to included No one will ever know, which was later covered by a lot of country singers, but it's not here. Still, no matter as I've got plenty of other versions of the song.
This is a great collection of Hank's music, although the familiar songs are still the best. At the price I paid for it in the UK, it represents great value for money (and a lot cheaper than I paid for 40 Greatest Hits).
