Review

"... almost 400 pages of strips by the great and the good of American cartooning over the past 30 years."
--Teddy Jamieson, 'Best Graphic Novels of the Year', The Glasgow Herald, November 29, 2008

Product Description

Comic art is a vital, highly personal art form in which change - rapid and unpredictable - is the norm. In this exciting new anthology, comic artist Ivan Brunetti focuses on very recent works by contemporary artists engaged in this world of change. These outstanding cartoonists, selected by Brunetti for their graphic sophistication and literary style, are both expanding and transforming the vocabulary of their genre. The book presents contemporary art comics produced by 75 artists, along with some classic comic strips and other related fine art and historical materials. Brunetti arranges the book to reflect the creative process itself, connecting stories and art to each other in surprising ways: nonlinear, elliptical, sometimes whimsical, even poetic. He emphasizes continuity from piece to piece, weaving themes and motifs throughout the volume. As gorgeously produced as Brunetti's previous anthology of graphic fiction, this book does full justice to the creative work of Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, and the other prominent or emerging comic artists who are currently at work at the cutting edge of their medium.

Brunetti shows an impressive grasp of the current scene. His choices include the medium's established names, but he also unearthed first-rate contributions from generally unknown artists. A comprehensive survey of current stuff. Also, this book is a beautiful object, with an exceedingly appealing cover.

By Eileen Shaw TOP 500 REVIEWER
Ivan Brunetti edited this anthology and he has been inclusive of the current best and some of the most groundbreaking of the commix world's bad boys and girls. Only those innocent of the underground outrageous need wonder if this is what children might want to read. They may, that is, but they should not. Which is not to say these pages are smeared by pornography, they are not. Yet neither are they innocent of adult content. The ideal reader might be a commix virgin anywhere from 16 to 94. It is a veritable primer of the art form. Within these 400 pages there is something for almost everyone who like commix. Note, these are not comics.

Art Spiegelman, Robert Crumb, Gilbert Hernandez, Charles Burns, Megan Kelso, Jessica Abel, Debbie Dreschler, Joe Sacco, Phoebe Cloeckner, Bill Griffith, Harvey Pekar, Adrian Tomine, Jaime Hernandez, Daniel Clowes and Chris Ware. The work runs from David Collier's high school style wars to Lynda Barry's dancing Grandmas and babies; it has the depth and despair of Joe Sacco's story of the Balkan conflict as well as the lightness of Matthew Thurber's Island of Silk and Ectoplasm, and runs from the stylised relationship problems of Jeffrey Brown to Lief Goldberg's marvellously prescient National Seashore. You should look out for Mack White's Nudist Nuns of Goat Island, Renee French's horrific children, Action Camus (by R Sikoryak), and The Road to Rana Poona by Kim Deitch in particular.

... of the work of mostly contemporary American comic Artists. Inside this amazing hardcover book you will find several complete strips and several excerpts of longer stories, with the range of stylisation being vast.
I find it very awe inspiring to look through this sort of book, with so many different interpretations of the world and how to describe it placed side by side, so I have to give it 5 stars, as it is also beautifully presented and is built to last.
If you liked this book, you will also like Vol.1, which is more of the same!

OK well - Jonathan Ross has made a decent fist of entering the comic universe - which celebrity can't you wait for to enter the fray with their own graphic novel, and er, if you like, what would it be about ? 1 1 day ago
