Inclusive of Minority Voices 8 Jun 2008
By Ana Mardoll - Published on Amazon.com
American Literature, Vol. 1 / 0-13-083814-4

This American Literature anthology encompasses the Colonial to Romantic periods of American literature. Although the anthology starts out on a European note with Columbus' "Letter Describing His First Voyage" and fails to start the volume of American culture and writings prior to European discovery of the Americas, the volume does at least provide some American Indian myths and writings throughout the anthology. There are also female voices included (Anne Bradstreet, Mary Rowlandson, Louisa May Alcott) and writings which represent the slavery voice (Olaudah Equiano, Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe). All told, this is an excellent anthology of early Colonial and United States literature, and I appreciate the effort made to include voices which are often underrepresented in anthologies.

Good Textbook 23 Jan 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This was the textbook used in my American Literature I class last semester. Volume Two is being used in the second half that I am taking this semester. The book offers a good collection of American Literature from the earliest European Explorers to the late 1800's. The additional information offered in the introductions to each author and literary time period adds to the student's understanding of the works.

The footnotes are numbered strangely and they don't elaborate on the footnoted item very well.
