I followed this band around the UK (yes, Scotland and Wales, not just England) and mainland Europe from 1990 to 2005. Then, just over 60 years old, I hung up my boots - an NMA gig is a physical experience and I couldn't hold my ground any more in the surging crowd. It's one of my great regrets about growing old. This band, its music and its attitude literally changed my life. I know that's often said but it's true, there was a gap for something that it filled on first hearing.
As it says in this wonderful set, it's impossible to pick a representative list of NMA songs that will please everybody - or indeed most fans. I would have a very different list but I've got all their albums and singles so I'm not going to get upset about omissions from my personal list of favourites. And it includes the three absolutely essential songs -"Vengeance", "Green and Grey" and "Here Comes The War". The DVDs are wonderful; there's nothing like this band live, with the crowd dancing and roaring out the lyrics, word-perfect and as tribal as hell. This anthology will awaken again those memories of intense joy, camaraderie and stumbling out of an NMA gig battered, tired and exhalted, able to stand for another interval what is called the real world - until the next gig.... Thank you, NMA. I don't care what anyone else says (they taught me that, too).

New Model Army - Anthology (Attack Attack)
Available in both 2CD and 2CD/3DVD/book editions, New Model Army's 30th anniversary anthologies should be of interest to the multitude who have dipped into the band's output over the last three decades, whilst the hardcore fans will surely moisten at the mere thought of the five disc set, featuring shows from 1985, 1990, 1996 and 2006. Phew.
Formed in Bradford by singer-guitarist Justin Sullivan, the band have released 13 studio albums, gone through a series of line-ups, and remained resolute outsiders from the outset. The press never really got a handle them, finding it difficult to pigeonhole them, or offer any genuine support. It didn't stop them, as the wealth of material on the two CDs testify. The trio of tracks from their debut "Vengeance" album (the title track, "A Liberal Education" and "Christian Militia") don't pull a single punch between them, and set out a formula based on zero compromise. It must have seemed like a slap in the face to a music press still enamoured with the sloganeering of The Clash and The Jam, or getting all worked about the latest wave of cartoon punk (I'm looking at you, Sounds). They certainly didn't seem prepared to entertain the possibility that NMA were the real deal.
Compiled by the band and former members, it's difficult to quibble with a collection that hits most of their highpoints. However, I do have one question: why no "No Rest"? 8/10.

This was bought for my husband who used to go and see NMA years ago. By the amount of times it is played, I can only assume it is good - he likes it a lot and would recommend it for all New Model Army fans.
