I bought the Alvin Lee Anthology 2 CD for 2 reasons.
1. I like Alvin Lee.
As a player, and in my humble opinion, Alvin Lee is one of the true craftsmen, blues, and rock guitarists ever. Like Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and George Harrison, Alvin Lee, is one of the few guitarist who can make a guitar talk or even cry, to pull on the heartstrings of the listener, a gift only hard work, perseverance, and God given talent can attain. Alvin Lee's speed of playing, picking ability, and transcending emotion to his instrument, is renowned; placing Alvin Lee in the pantheon hails of guitar God stature leaving other guitarist in his wake. The amazing thing is Alvin Lee is still performing, and his speed has not slowed down with age.
2. I love the song The Bluest Blues.
Sure there are other songs on the CD which are good, but for me, The Bluest Blues is simple one of the best songs Alvin Lee ever wrote, and possibly one of the best blues based songs ever written.
With George Harrison's, hauntingly emotionally driven slide guitar playing, coupled with Alvin Lee's opening, and closing guitar work, makes The Bluest Blues a masterpiece of a song. I simple never get tired of listing to the song, and have to force myself to listen to other material.
Maybe to much money spent for an anthology with 2 CD's to get just get one clean track of one great song, but I've spent more on Japanese or Australian CD imports to get one track off a musicians work, but lets be honest, I'll bet most us at one point or another, bought a record, a tape, or a CD just to get that one song we truly enjoy. Am I right or am I wrong?
Would I recomend purchasing the Alvin Lee Anthology 2? You bet, as it is a must have for any musicians library, and I plan on purchasing the Alvin Lee Anthology 1 CD as well.
