Perfect introduction to Curtis Mayfield!,
By
This review is from: The Anthology 1961-1977 (Audio CD)
Yes, this is the ultimate introduction to Curtis Mayfield! There are dozen complications, but this one is superior because
(a) it includes his work both with the Impressions and as a solo artist (but focuses on his best period, till 1977), and (b) it has 2 fully loaded CD's, which makes it a good value for money! It starts with his Sam Cooke imitations, and it ends with his unique funky approach. Essential soul! Buy this, you will be thrilled.

Use your money wisely.,

I am not sure about this being the best place to begin an appreciation of Curtis Mayfield's career. It is far too skewed in favour of his period with The Impressions, in my opinion, at the expense of his solo output. There is simply too little of the latter to make this truly worthy of recommendation, although the solo selections are top drawer stuff.
Furthermore, it has a really naff sleeve. (Okay, i know that should not be one of the main factors in deciding a purchase!) Avoid this one. Check out the other compilations, or go for the Charly box set. The packaging may be cheapish, but the music easily makes up for that. And it will probably be much better value than this sub-standard double, which i chose to off-load.

EXCELLENT OVERVIEW,
By ALAIN ROBERT - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Anthology 1961-1977 (Audio CD)
Like all his soul mates of the sixties,CURTIS MAYFIELD started with his IMPRESSIONS a gentle and delicate sound, well suited to his low voice.By the end of the sixties,CURTIS turned socially conscencious and his writing deepened enough to become more than simple entertainment.CURTIS reached his peak with CURTIS and the soundtrack for the movie SUPERFLY.Still, those early IMPRESSIONS songs like GYPSY WOMAN,MINSTREL AND QUEEN,IT'S ALL RIGHT and PEOPLE GET READY retain their particular charm. This good anthology covers both his music with THE IMPRESSIONS and his solo career.CURTIS's voice is not like any other of the time, his sweet tone is like velvet.

It Does Not Get Much Better,

Curtis Mayfield is one of the most impressive musical talents I have ever encountered. And while this set is not perfect it offers an adequate sampling of Mayfield's genius. Mayfield's genius goes far beyond his always inspired singing and beautiful musically orchestration. Thanks to Curtis, The Impressions are the soul of soul music and Mayfield's ability to expose himself and sing with such intense feeling and sincerity is heroic and inspiring. Just as evident as Mayfield's emotional heroism and extraordinary musical talent is his sensitivity and cutting intelligence. As for the songs themselves? They are the manifestation of these words. Curtis is as true as it gets.

The Anthology 1961-1977,
By Ray Lee Johnson - Published on Amazon.com

This CD represents the best of Curtis Mayfield. He was undoubtedly a soul genius who could touch my inner soul with the vivacious joy in his singing, the jubilation, and the determination in his voice as he sings "Keep on Pushin",for example. The Impressions were my favorite soul group of the sixties. As a teenager I had an opportunity to meet and talk to them backstage at the Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.I was starstruck of course, but I thought that they were the coolest guys in the world to take the time to speak with me.
While listening to the CD as I write this review,I think what a shame that many so kids of this generation will never have the opportunity to hear this great music. One of the things that mystifies me is why the so-called "old school" radio stations never play much beyond "Superfly" as a tribute to Mayfield when he wrote so much great music for the Impressions,Jerry Butler,The Staple Singers,Billy Stewart,Major Lance,Aretha Franklin, and many others. The music was romantic, touching, relevant, and simply beautiful with excellent lyrics;wonderfully executed harmonies; Johnny Pate's exemplary powerful and soulful arrangements;and of Curtis'inspired guitar licks. The Anthology CD is a testament to Mayfield's glory and certainly worth the time and money. |
