Product Description

Observer

'A gem. Proulx has taken a risk with this novel and it's paid off...He's funny, convincing and sympathetic' --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Luke Hunter thinks he’s joking when he tells a good friend exactly when – 8:37 the following morning – and how – hit by a red van from out of town – that friend will die. But when events unfold as Luke foretold, he wants none of it: he has enough problems being an average teenager without the added burden of seeing into the future – not to mention the ever-after. Terrified, but pretending not to be, Luke pushes his friends and family away, while the local news crew, a Christian fundamentalist preacher and a missing girl’s frantic mother all draw nearer, seeking to profit from Luke’s new-found ‘gift’.

Written in clear, precise prose, Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet is a darkly comic coming-of-age novel about death and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning coming-of-age novel, 26 Aug 2009
By Liz E Tartt (Shropshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I loved this. It's one of those rare books built around an original idea, with a set of characters you'll absolutely believe in and care about, and nothing to spoil it. Luke the protagonist is a wonderful teenager (hard to believe he was written by a woman!) - he's clever, funny, basically a nice guy but has all those usual teenage-boy flaws and problems which you just can't help wanting him to overcome.
Definitely one of the best books about growing up that I've read, set in the real modern world with real young people, despite the fantastical prophet-of-doom premise.
Certainly not overlong, I thought it was just right and it gave me that end-of-good-book sense of loss. Having read it some time ago, I was here to see if the author has anything else out yet - a pretty good reccommendation in itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly enjoyable, 25 May 2009
By JamieJ (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I picked this up to read purely on the basis of the premise of the story and the situation of the protagonist, all of which sounded intriguing. The book opens well with a number of engaging opening chapters, and well-developed voice for Luke and his peers. However after the opening I felt the book dragged somewhat and a hundred pages in it felt a little too clearly like it was breaking out into the second act development of character too explicitly, and I was getting bored. However I'm glad I persevered as things do get tightened up towards the end and it closes well, having charted an interesting journey and progression.

Overall I just felt the book needed a bit of an edit to clear up some confusions, build up some of the characters more and cut some unnecessary material and diversions. I felt it could have been half the length without achieving anything less. So in all: an enjoyable read, but not something you can't live without.
