This is an exceptionally random books. I'd not heard of Ant Farm until I was asked to write an essay on one of their works last year, but on buying this book I soon wished I had!

As more-designers-than-architects, they explore the realms of more edgy design, ranging from inflatables to time capsules to a one-off house (House of the Century - erotic, inprising and heart-wrenching all at the same time). The cover picture of the half buried cadillacs is one of their more well known projects, but only scrapes the surface of this team's capabilities and skills. Most of their projects are covered in this book (but with varying degrees of detail) and it gives a fantastic insight into their work. A lot of their designs were destroyed in a studio fire in 1978, so this book is perhaps the most comprehensive and most detailed record in existance.

I'v found their work inspiring and useful as pecedence for my own work. Cultural ties with the work and 1960's America are also evident, and I found that this further adds to the significance and time-stamping of the designs. Some of them reinforce the American Dream, others gently mock it.

For more information of House of the Century, type 'Mojo Relic' into youtube for a fantastic video filmed just after completion. This also leads to videos covering the construction.

I highly recommend this book - esspecially if you like Archigram, amongst others.

Fantastic book 8 Jun. 2004

Format: Paperback
This book is full of great pictures documenting the complete Ant Farm collection of works. Original design sketches and interviews with the artists offer a lot of insight into the art group Ant Farm. I may be a bit biased since I study this kind of art, but I think someone could enjoy this book even if they know little to nothing about Ant Farm. In my opinion, its worth every penny.
A starling group of artists that we shouldn't forget. 12 Nov. 2013

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The reason I purchased this book was to research a handmade 3-colored poster I purchased. The handmade poster was done for Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. It couldn't have been a more perfect book. The book documents and gives the history of the Ant Farm. In the late 1960's and 1970's, a collective of artists and architects started to pushed the boundaries of their craft. They came from different schools such as RISD, YALE AND TEXAS. They band together and did video, performance art and new fresh architecture, way before many recognized what they were doing. Most people will remember them for the "Cadillac Ranch". Ten old Cadillacs stuck into a stark landscape in Texas. But they did much more than that. If your interested in this group of original artists, this is the book you want.
