Having not had a job interview for a while I wanted a refresher of how to prepare. This book provides advice and sample answers to just about every question you can think of. You have to think about how YOU would answer each question (you can't just parrot-learn the answers in the book), but the advice is good for every question.

There is also advice on how to prepare answers to ask the interviewers too so you don't have that awkward pause when the interviewer asks "Do you have any questions for me?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but wordy in places 17 April 2014

I look great on paper. In fact, I am great!

Unfortunately, interviews are not my forte - all my well rehearsed answers go out of mind, leaving it unhelpfully blank. (If only I could see the questions in advance, I'd be awesome!)

In the past, I have done lots of googling with regards to technique and 'text book answers'. I wouldn't say that this book taught me anything I hadn't heard already but it's really handy to have it all in one place.

It's clear and thorough. Quite a comprehensive guide.

Now I just need to apply it......I'll let you know how it goes ;)

Many people find interviews nerve-racking, usually because it is an unfamiliar situation and they don't know what to expect. This book contains a vast array of questions of all sorts of different types which might help the reader to anticipate the sort of things he / she might be asked. While the book does give an idea of the types of answers you could give, you will obviously need to think about your own situation, experience and skills and use these to develop your own answers, but at least you will have some idea of what to expect and can therefore plan accordingly. The layout and structure are clear and logical and I think this will be a useful tool to many.

Answering Tough Interview Questions For Dummies (Paperback)

The book.

This is another great book in the Dummies series. It goes into detail about how to answer difficult questions during an interview.

Layout.

The layout is logical and the structure is good, each chapter building on from the previous one.
It's not just about answering difficult or very involved questions but how to approach an interview and gain some control over it and your own destiny.

The questions.

There are plenty of examples and the book not only work for the person being interviewed but the interviewer as well. It will give lots of ideas on questions to ask to get to the bottom of a persons ability to do the job in hand. I have found it very useful when preparing to put together an interview panel as well.

Relevance.

The questions are well thought out and the meaning of responses explained so it gives the interviewer some scope on how the interview is developing.

Overall.

An excellent guide for people on both side of the interview. It's scope is wide but there are industry specific examples and it is up to to date and well put together. Very useful for students, jobseekers and HR personnel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and well laid out 8 Mar 2014
By S Finnerty TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is excellent preparation for anyone who has an interview coming up. It guides you through the steps you need; from researching the job you are applying for, calming nerves and exuding confident body language as well as working out answers to question you may be asked. It includes sections on competency-based interviews which is the format favoured by most corporations these days as well as the dreaded hypothetical questions which are thankfully less common. There are also sections on common mistakes and on asking the right kind of questions. The book is well laid out with the usual informal style for the "Dummies" series but has many helpful tips throughout to help you succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully helpful book 27 Feb 2014
By Birmingham Book Reader VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is such a helpful book.
Firstly the size is great being smaller than the normal for Dummies books,
it fits in easy to a bag so can be carried in a bag and be read when on train/bus etc.
The contents of the book are really helpful, packed full of great tips for answering those tough interview questions.

Such as

Do not sit before invited to.
Do not over fill the CV as the person doing the interview would rather hear from you.
Think before an interview the questions could be asked.
And so on.
This book does not provide the "set" answers but encourages the reader to think for themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helps with good questions - worth the money 17 April 2014
By Marco Rossini TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm not particularly good at interviews, and even when I thought I did it perfectly I didn't get the job, sometimes I thought I didn't do very well but still got a job - not sure how it works. However, nowadays apparently you need to give 'key' words to score points according to the modern interview system.

This book helps you to prepare for several tricky questions and 'situations' they tend to put you into, and you can build up more confidence before the big day. I think I'll keep this book for a long time, so I can improve my interview skills and prepare for them. I believe in the power of practice and preparation, as "Be Prepared" said by Baden-Powell.
