4.0 out of 5 stars Good, helpful interview book 10 Sep 2006
By m.bison
Format:Paperback
I found that this book gave some good answers to the "Give me an example of..." questions that crop up time and time again in interviews. The book will provide a decent script of what to say in interviews and when filling out application forms. After several interviews, giving an example of team working, organisational skills, communication skills etc will become like telling a long joke or a familiar story. The answers aren't perfect and they can be specific to a certain role, so you have to be creative and re-work the sample answers to fit into your employment/education background. Overall, though, they offer a good starting point of what employers what to hear from you in an interview.

The competencies-based chapter is a big plus with this book. Competency-based interviews are all the rage these days and a lot of interview books do not deal with them at all. Although there is only one chapter that deals with competency interviews in this book, it is one chapter more than most.

Although it may seem like it, this book won't get you a job if you are good at simply memorising lines. Until that book comes out (and I'll be first in the queue when it does), this is probably the best interview aid out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really informative - strangely amusing too 3 July 2006
Format:Paperback
I bought a bunch of interview books in one go as I hadn't been on an interview for a while until recent circumstances necessitated a job hunt.

The content is excellent if you want advice on how to answer typical (and some not-so-typical) questions then this book is great.

The author presents a BBC TV programme on the topic of job hunting too so obviously a very credible source.

A+++

5.0 out of 5 stars Get that job! 5 Feb 2007
By JHM
Format:Paperback
Don't get me wrong, I'm good at my job so I felt a bit embarrassed buying this book that says it's for Dummies! But there's a heap of information here that the title doesn't really hint at. For example there's a couple of chapters on researching and preparing way before you get to an interview. And while it sounds obvious in retrospect, it's not something I'd ever really done enough of (I'd tended to wing it).

The book takes quite a long time to work through as you really need to read the advice and then figure out your own approach to answering the question, but the author seems to know what he's talking about as I had a bunch of interviews recently and got offered two jobs!

This book is a must for anyone who has ANY interview coming up! I just had an interview for a postgraduate university course after a very long gap since my last interview, and due to this book I aced it!:)

It guides you through all the steps you need to take to shine in any interview, from researching the job (or course etc...) you are going for (imperative!),polishing your interview performance ( including helpful tips to calm your nerves and exude confident body language) to working out answers to literally any question you may be asked. In addition it helps you avoid common mistakes which could cost you getting an offer.

The author emphasizes the importance of using the answers he gives as a guide only, and to create your own. Although this takes some time and effort on your part, it is vital as they need to be genuine. Although some of the questions used in my recent interview were worded slightly differently to the authors, boy was it helpful to have created and practiced my answers! No question stumped me, and I had plenty of examples/ points ready which I could use throughout the interview. A real confidence booster!

This book includes chapters on competency-based interviewing (becoming more and more popular with interviewer's), thriving under pressure interviews, hypothetical questions and many others. In addition it has a chapter on asking the right kind of questions. Following Dr Rob Yeung's advice the questions I asked led into a discussion where I could really show my enthusiasm for the course, which I think may have tipped the boat in my favour!

The book has a simple layout, and helpful pointers and tips throughout to help you before, during and after the interview. In summary this book will help with any interview, is packed with vital information, and is written by a master interviewer. It is an interviewee life-saver, Thank you Dr Rob Yeung!

An essential preparation tool for those of us who find the pressure you put on yourself during interviews can leave you toungue tied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly useful 27 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
As someone with considerable experience of interviews from both sides of the table, I didn't expect to learn much from this book yet found it surprisingly useful. So I'm sure it will be even more useful to anyone with little experience of interviews. I especially recommend it to anyone who has never had a competency-based interview because this type of interview is now fairly standard for permanent jobs in large companies and increasingly common for other jobs, even for short-term contracts, and it's well covered here.

The main part of the book covers different types of questions. For each question, there is a general approach to answering it, along with example answers. I read a chapter or two a day and soon noticed recurring themes. After a while, I found that I started to think of my achievements and qualities in terms of good answers to interview questions. Scary, but useful if you've got an interview scheduled.

However, the short supplementary chapters at the end can be ignored because the advice in them is variously trite (on passing psychometric tests), misguided (on sending a "thank you" letter to the interviewer), outdated (on networking) or risky (the advice on negotiating a good deal for yourself, which doesn't take account of job market conditions).

Finally, I recommend that you read another book at the same time as this one, in order to ensure you have a good answer to the question "What was the last book you read?"
