5.0 out of 5 stars Never Mind The Sex Pistols, Here's AFI 19 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Don't be fooled. This album is nothing of the emo that AFI has evolved into. Most current AFI lovers will hate this album. But I must admit, this is better than the Sex Pistols. I get the feeling that might get me shot...
This album has some great things about it. My personal favourtie are the occasional bass solos at the beginning of the song, bringing out the true heart of any rock band. All the riffs are catchy, and the songs are short and fast paced. To be honest, I hated this album when I first got it and now, five years on its always at the top of my CD stack. I can't get enough of it. Like every good album, the best thing about it is that every time you hear it you find something new. I don't reccomend this to everyone, but anyone who like bands like the Sex Pistols should try this out.

3.0 out of 5 stars More 2.5 but I rounded up 2 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Energetic pop punk which occasionally verges on hardcore. The songs do not hang about which means that before you know where you are a few songs would have flown past. This means that some of the songs are a bit hard to differentiate.

It is all a bit samey until we hit `Cereal Wars' which leads in nicely with a bass riff and sounds sufficiently different enough to make you go `hmm...nice' and the highlights continue through `The Mother in Me' and `Rizzo in the box' three tracks which show genuine potential, unfortunately the album trails off a bit again after these tracks, which is quite a shame.

`Shut Your Eyes and Open Your Mouth' is better than this album, but they are interesting steps ever closer to the amazing `Art of Drowning'. This album will be interesting for fans of AFI and a good cure for those who thought their later stuff was a bit too sanitized.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 26 Mar 2005
Format:Vinyl
This debut album, is different to all their newer albums (except Very Proud Of Ya!, which is kind of like it) this is one of their most punky album, and has some very catchy songs (i wanna mohawk, cereal wars, your name here, etc) it contains clips from resevoir dogs, another programe from the makers of the young ones, and one i dont know were its from.
anyway probably my 2nd favourite album, but not as good as the art of drowning.

4.0 out of 5 stars In the beggining 25 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
I'm a long term AFI fan and have and enjoy all their albums.

This is AFI's earliest album and along with the follow up 'very proud of ya' is AFI at their most punk. Although a couple of tracks I wan't a mowhawk, Cereal Wars and High School Football fit the pop punk criteria. This is not a bad thing all three are enjoyable, energetic tunes and I have great memeries of moshing away in London many many moons ago.

This may not be suit the pallette of Fans who have only heard the later albums but since it so cheap I wouls seriously recomend you give it a try and get a feeling of where a truly great band started a long and succssusful career.

Albums only flaw is that all the songs are at a very similar frantic pace, which while generates loads of energy, means the album can sounld a little samey throughout.

Fantasitic bass solo's are one of the many highlights.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM - PUNK HARDCORE 24 Aug 2008
By BL
Format:Audio CD
OK Some people wont like this review because I mainly typed it to answer to some guy that said he hates this album and likes new afi. But I felt it was appropriate anyway for people thinking about buying this album. OK for the people that dont know, you need to get this straight: New afi is nothing like old AFI. If you listen to more soft stuff, then this is NOT for you. Go buy latest albums which are from sing the sorrow +, that by the way are not my style. I absolutely love this album, 'shut your mouth and open your eyes', and 'very proud of you'. Even black sails I like quite a lot, but this is more for people my style that wont like new emo soft commercial afi. This is more punk - hardcore scene stuff. And it is VERY good.
