Susanna Tamaro's 'Answer Me' is an unusual book written in the form of three novellas. In the first story entitled, `Answer Me', we meet Rosa, an orphan and the daughter of a prostitute, who is adopted by her aunt and uncle. Rosa, who is aware of the fact that her relatives really do not care about her, is desperate to find love, but only seems to alienate those around her. And then she meets Giulia and Franco, who start to restore her faith in others, only to see it crushed in front of her eyes.
In the second story: `No Such Thing as Hell', an abused wife attempts to protect her sensitive and beautiful son from her cruel bully of a husband, but by ineffectually trying to protect him, she causes even more problems which result in tragedy and heartbreak. In the final tale 'The Burning Wood' a widower uses the analogy of a decaying forest to recount the unravelling of his marriage which was poisoned by his intense and irrational jealousy. He then has to seek the forgiveness of his emotionally damaged and estranged daughter.
Susanna Tamaro has, I understand, achieved international acclaim for another of her novels:'Follow Your Heart' and my edition of 'Answer Me' states that this book is also becoming an international bestseller. However, if I am entirely honest, although I found this book to be an unusual and thought-provoking read, I also found it unremittingly depressing. It's not that this book is not well written, or that the author does not have something to say - she does, and she uses philosophic discussion and religion (or the lack of it) to put her case across effectively. Perhaps the author's intention was to spiritually galvanise her readers, but I am afraid that it did not have that effect on me and I was glad to turn the last page. I am genuinely sorry to leave a rather negative review for this book especially as it is, at present, the only review on the page, but I have to be honest and say that I found this a competently written but mostly depressing read.
