Just finished 'Gathering' and it was awesome, back to the good old days. Fast paced story, big magic, great characters and great ending. Now just really disappointed that I have to wait ANOTHER year for the next installment and then presumably ANOTHER YEAR after that for the next one! Whilst I love Robert Jordan and think Brandon Sanderson is excellent (I read all of his books when I found out he was finishing the Wheel of Time), I can't believe the publisher is stringing this out so long and presumably making lots of extra money!
If you look on Brandon Sanderson's blog, the question isn't why we have to wait so long, but how is it possible that he's churning the books out so quickly?
Before he took up the WoT gig, Sanderson was under contract to Tor for several of his own novels (THE WAY OF KINGS, due in 2010, and its sequel, as yet unwritten, which he still has to write from scratch for a mid-2011 release), and also under contract to a second publisher for a series of YA books called ALCATRAZ. Both his publishers were unwilling to give him time to concentrate solely on WoT. If he did, all three would likely be finished or approaching being finished by now and Tor and Orbit could release the books more quickly. However, because Sanderson is having to juggle the WoT books with other work, it's taking longer to put them out.
Going by Sanderson's recent Facebook comments on his fan page, it's possible that TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT might only just scrape into a 2010 release, and could possibly be delayed (although he'll try not to have that happen). Because he hasn't got anything done on A MEMORY OF LIGHT, the final book, it's more likely that will miss 2011 and be an early 2012 release.
Having read this series for the best part of 15 years, I am fine to wait a little longer for a well written ending. No need to rush now. I'll re-read the entire series later in life at my own pace, too. There's plenty of other good books to keep me entertained until then and there will be plenty more after this series (excellent as it is) is done with.
I agree that the wait is frustrating but we all want this fantastic series to be given the decent ending that it deserves and so will just have to be patient. Perfection takes time! I have read the whole published series 3 times so that I can keep reminding myself of all the ins and outs of the many plots going on! My husband can't understand why but once the Wheel of Time gets its claws into you, you're hooked for life!
I agree with all the comments made by the previous correspondents, but I feel a greater urgency to reach the end of the series....at 76 years old I am not convinced that I will ever enjoy the feeling of 'at last I know'. Maybe some one will text the outcome to me in 'the other place', whichever that may be! I didn't even know that this book was available, must order it today.....in case! (Laughs) It's not available in the UK until November!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
