Superb cinematography (filmed on location in the shires of Ross and Inverness) which captures the raw, harsh working conditions of farm labourers in Scotland during WWII. The film details the local reaction to a group of Italian P.O.W.'s sent to work amongst them as part of a rehabilitation programme.
Michael Radford's direction is excellent as he strives for total realism, and Phyllis Logan is truly wonderful as the young married woman seeking more from life than a cold and frustrating marriage. In fact, all of the performances are uniformly excellent.
The only negative aspect to me was the editing of the film which could have been better, tending to jump all over the place and give no real sense of time or continuity.
There are no subtitles on the DVD which would have been a bonus as the native Scots accents are thick and tough to decipher. Picture quality is clear and presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Sound is mono. Running time is actually 97 minutes and not 90 as listed here by Amazon.
I had seen this once before when it was originally shown on Channel 4 and never forgotten parts of it, especially the naked Phyllis Logan.
