TV comedy drama, written by Jack Rosenthal, that originally featured in ITV's 'Sunday Night Theatre' strand. Long-suffering weekend referee Mr. Armistead (David Swift) refuses to give up on trying to teach the rougher elements of Co-op Albion and Parker Street Depot about fairness, sportsmanship, and restraint. No matter what the provocation, or how much testosterone is flying through the air, Mr Armistead brings his own home-grown philosphy of life to bear on the players, whether they want to hear it or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well observed comedy 5 Jun 2010

'Another Saturday And Sweet FA' is a television play by BAFTA winner Jack Rosenthal that was part of ITV's celebrated 'Sunday Night Theatre' anthology series in 1972. A treat for fans of that era of television.

This 51 minute film is very entertaining, notable for the fact that not a great deal happens in it, the appeal of it is it's well observed script. The style of the writing makes everything appear all so natural. Like real life, it brings to the screen all of the little things that everyday people take for granted, simply because - we see and do such things everyday.

It's the story of an amateur football match in a small town in the north of England, the long-suffering referee Mr. Armistead (known as 'Lord Longford') believes in fair play at all times, the two rival teams believe this to mean that he should always give them the advantage. To any fans of 1970s British television, the cast should look very familiar, David Swift, Freddie Fletcher, Duggie Brown (all fine actors who have continued to act) and cameos from David Bradley (now famous for the 'Harry Potter' films) and Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre Barlow in 'Coronation Street'.)

This play is very typical of it's time and it's good to have such a simple and witty story available on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Story, Brilliantly Written 21 May 2013

J.R. was the master at taking a simple plot and writing the perfect dialogue. His work lives on. He is up there with the likes of Bennet and Bleasdale.
