Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The delicately evocative voice of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh lies at the heart of Irish quintet Altan's sound. On Another Sky, she and her band work within a slightly less ethereal soundscape than Clannad, but it's still a long way from the compromises the Corrs made to bring their music to a wider audience. When Altan launch into a high-velocity reel or a set of jigs, they sound like a slicker version of some great little folk band that would be perfectly at home in a Dublin bar, but they stretch the boundaries a little with, for example, a version of Bob Dylan's "Girl From The North Country" treading a thin line between folk, country and down-home acoustic blues. Ciaran Curran's bouzouki gives the band's instrumental work a texture of its own and, far from being over-awed by the presence of star guests like Bonnie Raitt and dobro wiz Jerry Douglas, Altan relish the opportunity to dabble with unexpected instrumental colours and step out more lively than ever. --Johnny Black

Ever since hearing a song of theirs on a collection of Irish music (Eíst, Songs in their native language), I've become a devotee of Altan. Each of their albums is an absolute gem, mixing playful high-speed reels with emotional songs. Their latest effort, Another Sky is no different. You won't be able to keep your feet still during the reels, and if you're not moved by some of the songs (Island Girl is one of my favourites on this album), your heart must be made of stone. A must-buy for anyone who loves Celtic music.

This is not a modern release but you will never get tired of playing the haunting melodies of Altan. Their are 8 celtic songs and 5 instrumental which include 3 fast reels.
Total playing time was 49min 39sec, and all 13 tracks were great.

For me this album reminded me of sitting in an Irish pub with the local band coming in and having a jam.
This album is the best for an introduction to Altan, and their work in music.

As the album begins, Altan seem to be at tht top of their form, with the first two songs, "Ta aonach amarach" and "Green Grow the Rushes" as good as anything they have ever done. Although nothing else quite matches up to this beginning, the standard is high throughout, with one glaring exception - "Island Girl" is so twee and candy-coated it sounds more like a teenybopping folk/pop boy band, if there were such a thing, than a traditional music supergroup like Altan. Other than that, the instrumentals are excellent as ever and the other songs glowing examples of the band's versatility. Recommended.
