'A festive favourite is beautifully updated ... With wonderful illustrations, this has all the makings of a contemporary classic ... A delightful little gift book ... It's a delightful addition to any festive collection of books and reads as if the poet enjoyed her challenge ... An ideal family gift' -- Publishing News 20051101 'The story is fun and pacy and Marc Boutavant's illustrations are full of vibrant humour' -- Junior 20051101 'Together, Carol Ann's poems and Marc Boutavant's delightful illustrations make Another Night Before Christmas "a light-hearted joy, and, like all good poetry books, the enjoyment increases each time you read it - which will doubtless be many.' -- The Lady 20051101 'Brilliant ... Full of humour and goodwill, this captures all that is magical about Christmas Eve' -- Carousel 20051101 'Exquisitely enjoyable ... Duffy's genius and wit make it a must-have' -- The Times 20051015 'Duffy's language, as ever, has endless energy and verve' -- Independent on Sunday, Nicola Smyth 20051204 'A delightful little gift book' -- Herald 20051203 'Take this book in your bag and read it to yourself, to your kids, to the people on the bus. This is a great stocking filler that will become a family favourite' -- Sunday Express, Michelle Stanistreet 20051204 'This new version of one of Britain's best love poets is beautifully illustated and full of warmth and wit.'The Sun -- The Sun 20051204 'This new version of the original is full of wit and warmth. But she deserves better. She deserves to outsell most of the novelists on your shelf' -- Observer 20051204 'Brilliantly inventive' -- Sunday Telegraph 20051204 'Carol Ann Duffy has discovered a readership for poetry far beyond the core of devotees who normally sustain it' -- Sunday Times 20051204 'At once accessible and brilliantly idiosyncratic and subtle' -- Observer 20051204 'Poetry, like love, depends on a kind of recognition. So often with Duffy does the reader say, 'Yes, that's it exactly', that she could well become the representative poet of the present day' -- Sunday Times 20051204 'Carol Ann Duffy is considered a top poet. But she deserves better. She deserves to outsell most of the novelists on your shelf...Non-poetry readers should read Duffy; non-readers should read her. But, most of all, novelists should read her. If she frightens enough of them into non-production, she'll sell in the quantites she deserves' -- Observer 20051204 'Duffy's poetics are flawless - she never misses a beat, her pace is exhilarating, and her language is original and exciting' -- Scotsman 20051204 Praise for 'New Selected Poems 1984-2004' 'Carol Ann Duffy seems at the peak of a thoroughly assured reputation' -- Sunday Telegraph 20051204 'This week's must-read book' -- The Daily Telegraph 20051204 'Duffy's poetics are flawless - she never misses a beat, her pace is exhilarating, and her language is original and exciting ... Duffy's splendid updating of Clement Moore's famous Victorian poem ... remains true to the spirit of the original ... Marc Boutavant's atmospheric 1950s-style illustrations positively glow with Christmas cheer' -- The Scotsman 20051204 'A delightful reworking of the 1822 Clement Moore original ... with charming illustrations from Frenchman Marc Boutavant. This one of those rare wee gems from a much-loved poet' -- The Glasgow Herald 20051204

I've already bought this wonderful book for my children's stockings. But I partly got it for myself (!) because it's something that I could happily read to them time and again. Carol Ann Duffy's reworking of the classic poem 'A Night Before Chirstmas' is brilliant. It's sweet and magical but also witty, modern and deep. I can imagine it becoming a bit of a Chirstmas ritual as each year my kids return to it they'll get more out of it. The illustrations are gorgeous too.

There really is something for everyone in this book - a heart-warming poem that brings a modern twist to the traditional old favourite 'A Night Before Christmas' and fantastic illustrations with great detail and subtle humour. It is already a firm favourite with my children - and it will make the perfect Christmas gift too.

A piece of History 31 Oct 2006
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ok I admit i'm english and therefore some of the rhymes within this poem don't work with my accent, but I don't care. Here is an updated version that I feel will hold it's own and in years to come be used in schools around the world to show what the beginning of the 21st Century was like. Although the poet is clearly writing the same sort of story as the original "Night before Christmas", she interjects a real feeling of our time. The sense of a lack of faith and disillusionment that we have, and with her words re-lights those old feelings of wonder and belief that stir in all of us. The references, to tv's, malls, mobile phones, cash points give such a clear image of life today that i am sure it's recording future history in an engaging way. I loved it.
