Product Description

Product Description

Arguably the greatest comedy duo in show business history, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy delighted filmgoers and theatregoers for over thirty years. The public not only found Laurel's serene simpleton and Hardy's pompous buffoon hilarious, but they also thought of them as friends. Laurel and Hardy may have been nitwits, but they were loveable nitwits. Another Nice Mess: The Laurel and Hardy Story explores the lives and careers of Laurel and Hardy. The book examines how the comedians teamed up and it explains why, nearly half a century after their deaths, their films continue to enchant people all over the world.

By J. Lovins TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
BearManor Media presents "ANOTHER NICE MESS - THE LAUREL & HARDY STORY" (Paperback), by Raymond Valinoti Jr. (Author).

They had both performed in films for many years. How did they wind up together at Hal Roach Studios? To answer this question, we should explore each of their lives before they teamed up. This book goes into great detail with some of the most fascinating events ever to come to light in their business of entertainment.

At the time, Stan Laurel was thirty-seven years old and Oliver Hardy was thirty-five. They had both performed in films for many years, there is no record who made the decision and why, but Oliver Hardy, a portly, cherubic faced American actor known to his friends as "Babe", was chosen.

Mr. Hardy had appeared with Mr. Laurel in two earlier films, "The Lucky Dog" and "45 Minutes from Hollywood". But for this film, Babe would be Stan's teammate for the first time. Filming took place in late September. It as released on March 13, 1927 under the title "Duck Soup".

Laurel and Hardy hit their stride in silent films. But soon they would face a new challenge. In the fall of 1927 Warner Brothers studio released a films with dialogue sequences called "The Jazz Singer" with Broadway musical star Al Jolson in the film. And known as "talkies" the interest grew to moviegoers as considered silent films obsolete.

Hal Roach studio decided to convert to sound, as film goers would hear Laurel and Hardy for the first time. How Would dialogue affect the comedians' characters, carefully crafted in an entirely silent medium.

Stan and Ollie didn't have to worry about sound. Their voices were perfectly suited for their characterizations. Stan's soft, mild voice suited both the gentility and the vacuity of his character. As for Babe, he had a delicate, lilting cadence in his speech, perfect for his character's elegance and pomposity. They both quickly learned how to humorously deliver dialogue.

A career that spanned almost 30 years, and still going strong today thanks to television and DVD's.

A Terrific Read 10 Nov 2010

I enjoyed reading this excellent book. The story moves along briskly thanks to the author's lively writing. The author also includes a complete filmography of movies by Laurel and Hardy individually and as a duo. This is a great introductory book for anyone (teens, adults) who wanted to learn more about the legendary hollywood pair. Likewise, veteran Laurel and Hardy fans would enjoy another take on the story of a great comedy team.
