Product Description

Product Description
A beautifully written novel with great emotional appeal, set in Cornwall and Canada.Marine historian Mark Hannah finds a hauntingly beautiful figurehead in Newfoundland. He traces her ship, The Lady Isabella, back to a small port in Cornwall where he meets Gabrielle Ellis, the woman who is going to restore her to her former glory. Together they begin to trace jigsaw pieces of the lives of the carver, Tom Welland and the real Lady Isabella.Gabrielle becomes increasingly haunted by Isabella's lost life. As Gabrielle's own life becomes inextricably involved with Mark's, her story runs parallel with the lives of Isabella, her husband Richard and Tom Welland, the carver. Two women, living more than a hundreds years apart yet against the same wild backdrop of sea and landscape, make a rash bid for freedom to live another life. But for both of them, that choice means a loss which will greatly affect the next generation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Version of The Loving Spirit?, 4 Jun 2007
By Mrs. Katharine Kirby "Kate" (HELSTON, Cornwall United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have just finished living with this book close to hand for three days. I was moved to tears by it from time to time and felt very caught up with the dangerous dramas threaded throughout. I live in the area that this is loosely set in (The Helford River) and recognise the geography and history that Sara Macdonald describes so well. Nothing grates or irritates, she really does have a comfortable feel for Cornish life, so often reduced to oo arrs by other writers. I did feel that she may have stolen the theme of the figurehead from Daphne du Maurier at first but have to say that soon stopped mattering. Well done Sara, you are a modest and quiet writer who can grip the reader with truly touching situations and telling descriptions of emotions that felt uncomfortably close to home sometimes. I highly recommend this book especially as I have chosen it as our summer book club choice here on The Lizard.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Emotional Journey, 28 Jun 2007
By M B Dean "Marie" (Lancashire - England) - See all my reviews
I really like this book - have read it a few times now. Both stories, past and present, keep the reader interested and the characters become people you care about. Every time I read it I cry at the end. I can picture the house in London where Gabby and Mark live, the whole story is wonderfully emotional and grips you from beginning to end.
