I'm afraid that i do not know anything regarding the true story of the murder case involving Edith Thompson and Freddy Byewaters, who were hanged on the same day in January 1923. I had also not read the Amazon reviewers before seeing this film on DSTV in South Africa. Therefore my 4 stars is based on what i saw on screen, the storytelling, the excellent editing, photography, attention to period detail and to me the outstanding acting of Natasha Little as Edith Thompson( I have seen actresses winning Oscars for performances coming no where near to the one Natasha Little portrayed). In addition the supporting cast i found to be excellent.

After reading the critiques on Amazon, i belief the producers made a conscious decision to portray the actual events leading up to the murder of Edith Thompson's husband and then a short piece on the judgement and hanging of Edith Thompson. At the end of the film they give a short synopsis of the controversy the trial and sentencing caused. My own opinion is that they did this in a masterful manner and the producers made it quite clear that the film was fictionalised for dramatic purposes in parts.

So, that leads to the actual storytelling of the events leading up to the murder, which i thought were done superbly and i was totally gripped from start to finish. Yes, the film did portray Edith Thompson in a sympathetic light with regard to her affair and from what i have read in the reviews this may have been incorrect and hence the 4 stars. It should be noted that when her sister visits her in prison she does not paint herself in an innocent manner. However, i thought the male leads were entirely convincing
with Freddy Byewaters showing his vicious streak in a very suble way, while the husband played his role as the wronged man admirably.

This film does not put a foot wrong: it has a top notch cast, it is beautifully set, shot and edited, and has a script that it is by turns witty, sombre and always intelligent. Natasha Little has never done anything better, and has created a wonderful character in Edith Thompson. It is a thoughtful and very moving film. See it and enjoy!

Another Life tells the true story of the early life, events and aftermath leading up to the Thompson/Bywaters trial and execution.

It reveals Edith Thompson's story from 1909, when she first met her husband (who was to be knifed by her lover, Frederick Bywaters) right through to 9th January 1923 when she was executed for murder, along with Freddy Bywaters.

It gives us a tale of a brilliant, talented, ambitious, funny, warm, passionate woman whose only crime seemend to be a wild imagination coupled with infidelity. She was a career woman (she and her husband Percy had no children) and that was twisted against her in court. She was incriminated by her letters to Freddy, which he had kept. This was in spite of Freddy insisting she had absolutely nothing to do with it, but her letters said otherwise 'Do something desparate, Darlint' was taken and used against her at the Old Bailey in 1922...

This was just after WW1 and she was not a sympathetic figure in this man's world. She wanted a better life, and this was summed up in an early part of the film when she was talking to her loyal sister, Avis, about her upcoming wedding to Percy. Avis asked her 'What do you see in him?', to which Edith responded '...he's going to put me in his pocket and carry me to the stars'.

She was to be most disappointed, that was, until Freddy... Then life would never be the same again...

In a nutshell, you must see this film. I defy anyone not to cry, it is so sad and beautiful, and it is a true story.

Someone will make a good film about this contentious murder case one day, this isn't it.
The key elements in the case are: The controversial nature of the trial and resulting convictions; Mrs Thompson's letters; and the two accused's totally contrasting behaviour in court, i.e. her self-serving dishonesty and Bywaters' nobility (this in turn contrasted with his vicious murder of Percy Thompson). Instead, in this 2001 film version, the love triangle element is heavily overplayed and badly played in the cases of the male leads, who are also miscast. Nick Moran's performance as Mr Thompson is amateurish and crass. Natasha Little however does a fair job as Edith Thompson and the film looks good, but it's a serious case of what might have been.
This wasn't a 'tragic romance' it was a story of infidelity, an unhappy marriage, a brutal murder and a controversial court case.
No-one will ever know whether Mrs Thompson was simply a fantasist or whether she DID try to poison her husband, so to portray her almost entirely as a victim as this film does, is extremely disingenuous. Her letters to Bywaters hanged her as, unlike his letters to her, he'd kept them all.

The best screen version of this case I've seen, and would recommend, is Lady Killers - The Complete Series 2 [DVD] episode: 'The Darlingest Boy', with Gayle Hunnicutt as Mrs Thompson. Unlike 'Another Life' it relies far more on facts and actual courtroom testimony.
