An absolute gem! 15 Jan 2007

This film does not put a foot wrong: it has a top notch cast, it is beautifully set, shot and edited, and has a script that it is by turns witty, sombre and always intelligent. Natasha Little has never done anything better, and has created a wonderful character in Edith Thompson. It is a thoughtful and very moving film. See it and enjoy!

Poor Research 13 Mar 2011
Format:DVD
Personally, I did not really enjoy this film. I have a great interest in this case and found some of the characters to be unbelievable. For instance, Ioan Gruffudd did not capture the cheekiness and woman-appeal of Freddie Bywaters and did not have the right looks, i.e. it did not ring true - he was an actor playing a role. For me, real actors make you BELIEVE. Natasha Little was very good, but did not quite capture the distress of Edith Thompson in her final hours - that may be because the scene was too rushed.Nick Moran was totally mis-cast as Percy Thompson (reminded me of Gareth Barry, who plays for Manchester City, not of the Percy Thompson I have read about and seen photos of.

Why don't casting directors ever try to find people who resemble the characters they are to portray, when casting for true life drama? AND why do they not research adequately? At one point, a caption comes up saying, 'December 1913' and 'Edith' is seen to pick up a copy of the Daily Mirror, depicting a photograph of Dr Crippen and his hangman. Dr Crippen was hanged in 1910! I have seen this copy of the Daily Mirror used in other murder dramas that took place years hence. It is absolutely infuriating. If you want to make a film, please make it, but please do the research. Do the makers assume, quite improperly, that the public won't notice? Even if that is the case, that is no excuse!

Dr Crippen has now been proved innocent, by the way!

Another Life tells the true story of the early life, events and aftermath leading up to the Thompson/Bywaters trial and execution.

It reveals Edith Thompson's story from 1909, when she first met her husband (who was to be knifed by her lover, Frederick Bywaters) right through to 9th January 1923 when she was executed for murder, along with Freddy Bywaters.

It gives us a tale of a brilliant, talented, ambitious, funny, warm, passionate woman whose only crime seemend to be a wild imagination coupled with infidelity. She was a career woman (she and her husband Percy had no children) and that was twisted against her in court. She was incriminated by her letters to Freddy, which he had kept. This was in spite of Freddy insisting she had absolutely nothing to do with it, but her letters said otherwise 'Do something desparate, Darlint' was taken and used against her at the Old Bailey in 1922...

This was just after WW1 and she was not a sympathetic figure in this man's world. She wanted a better life, and this was summed up in an early part of the film when she was talking to her loyal sister, Avis, about her upcoming wedding to Percy. Avis asked her 'What do you see in him?', to which Edith responded '...he's going to put me in his pocket and carry me to the stars'.

She was to be most disappointed, that was, until Freddy... Then life would never be the same again...

In a nutshell, you must see this film. I defy anyone not to cry, it is so sad and beautiful, and it is a true story.
