Review Groove Armada's newest Late Night Tales is the 20th release of the series. Having provided the series with its biggest seller to date Andy Cato and Tom Findlay have been invited back to publicly rifle through their records and memory banks with the March 2008 Tales. Like all the rest of the series, it features music that inspired them, moves them or are just some of their favourite tracks. Based on the longstanding idea of the mix tape personalised for friends and lovers, this offers a selection of some great tunes, resequenced and reedited to form a new mix to listen to in the privacy of your own room.
If you like the GA and '80s electronica, you probably already own most of the tracks on this CD (Depeche Mode, The Human League, Roxy Music, Electronic and The Cure) but it's a joy to hear some of the remixes, particularly of Elle Et Moi by Max Berlin and the superb reversioning of Gaz Numan's Are Friends Electric (exclusive to this CD and based on a live track by the boys). There's new as well as old, too. Old, such as Marvin Gaye and Tami Tyrell, Stevie Wonder, and new, Peter, Bjorn and John or Midlake. However the biggest surprise of the album is the almost credible Will Young track, Friday's Child.
This series has been a great one for opening eyes to obscure artists you've never heard before, reminding you of tracks you haven't heard in ages and providing you with a feeling of nostalgia for the days when friends made you tapes with your name scrawled all over them. In this case, by treading a more familiar line, the new LNT, doesn't exactly do any of those things. It might not keep you up all night, but it does offer that pleasant combination of funk and electro that you've come to associate with the Groovers. --Susie Goldring
