From the Back Cover

"Nine years ago my daughter came home after an abusive marriage and developed Anorexia, yet did not recognise she was ill. It was the beginning of a living nightmare." Anorexia and Bulimia in the Family: One Parent’s Guide to Recovery is the first supportive self–help guide written by a carer for other carers. This is the book Gráinne Smith searched for without success, as she battled against the wall of rejection and denial her daughter’s illness built around her, determined not to allow her to be one of the 20 per cent who die. It is her personal story that proves that these house guests can be evicted. But it is more than that. It is also a practical guide with many tips and suggestions, including how to deal with eating, kitchen and bathroom issues, how to manage dramatic changes in mood behaviour and personality, how to get the best from professional help, and how to survive as a family.Gráinne Smith knows there are no easy answers. She has researched the subject through world–leading authorities, worked as a volunteer and on a helpline. She is a mother who has lived through the nightmare, and so has her daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars looking from a carers view 23 Nov 2010

Finding out my adult Daughter had been struggling with Anorexia was such a shock, I went into panic what could I do? I did not understand, I asked her "How can I help"
the "Minx" replied, I don't know, but i don't give up that easy,

I read the book and discovered what my daughetr had to contend with, and it was a contention, no more than that it was and is an up hill battle, just to get to eat something.

how did the book help, I learnt to understand what she was struggling with, and talk to her on her terms without judging her, I learnt through the book to understand that some days she just could not win, other days a small amout of food was an enormous victory.

Great book to help everyone understand the battle ahead

I bought this book as an attempt to try and help my family to dwal better wiht my eating disorder. it does have its place and does have some very good suggestions particularily for the practicalities of living with someone who is ill.

However I didnt like how I as the sufferer was eferred to as being my disorder. i am not. it is a part of me. i got what was trying to be suggested in that when someone is ill that that is often the only thintg people react to. however surely this just continues this. one of the most annoying things when you are ill is people reacting to you as though you are the disorder. you are not, but when you can remember so little of yourself well, it does not help to be referred to as "anorexia" or "bulimia"

however it does have some good insight and although as a sufferer I find it very trigerring it has definently been of huge comfort and reference to my family. It is certainly worth purchising.
