What an insight on the hardships of a slave, and how truly grotesque the business was here in the States. This has weighed heavily on my heart, and I've only been able to read intermittently, but it definitely has opened my eyes to the horrific realities of slavery, which were most definitely not taught or even hinted at in my school history coursework.

This book was an excellent read. Solomon North created a book that was as non-biased as possible. Thus allowing the reader to understand the evils and horrors of slavery without having to read fabricated facticious stories. I have recommended this book to friends and colleges.
3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe the masters would treat their slaves worse than they would animals 22 July 2014

Hard to believe the masters would treat their slaves worse than they would animals. It was enlightening as to how things were in the 1800. The blacks have come a long way which is good.
