Book Description

7 Sep 2004
The Annotated Brothers Grimm celebrates the richness and dramatic power of the fables in the most spectacular Grimm volume in decades. With forty newly translated stories-including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel-the book features the work of legendary painters such as George Cruikshank and Arthur Rackham; hundreds of annotations that explore the historical origins, cultural complexities and psychological effects of the tales; and a biographical essay on Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Perhaps most noteworthy is Maria Tatar's decision to include tales that were previously excised, including stories that the Grimms thought unsuitable for children. Tatar redefines the Grimm canon with this authoritative and entertaining collection. Enchanting and magical, The Annotated Brothers Grimm will cast its spell on children and adults alike.

Review

Praise for the first edition: "...can inspire that sharp fairytale pleasure at impending danger, as when the witch's voice cackles: 'Nibble, nibble where's the mouse? Who's that nibbling at my house.'" (Marina Warner, The Times); "[It is] a very good thing to rescue fairy tales from their airbrushed, deracinated, Barbie-ised place in modern culture..." (New Statesman); "For this beautiful edition...Maria Tatar has provided new translations and a series of fascinating textual notes." --(London Review of Books) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Annotated Brothers Grimm 11 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is an absolutely superb book. The introduction by AS Byatt is well worth reading. It gives a clear overview. Maria Tatar's annotations are informative and lead the reader into other areas of research - everything from psychology to intertextual readings and feminist critique. There's a comprehensive bibliography at the back, too. As for the tales themselves, Maria Tatar's translations are crisp and warm. The illustrations that accompany the stories include Rackham,Cruikshank,Crane and Nielsen. The production standards are very high. This is a beautiful book to handle. The typeface gives this book a real feel of quality. It would make an excellent present, of course. It is, ultimately, an invaluable resource as well as a pleasure. The Annotated Brothers Grimm

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical book! 22 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
I was lucky enough to receive this book as a Christmas gift and I absolutely love it.
The book includes a good mix of well known and more obscure stories with a wealth of knowledge about each. I have found it fascinating to learn how these stories have evolved over the years and adapted for the various different cultures who have made them their own.
The illustrations are as varied as the tales and create a beautiful backdrop for them. This is a book to be treasured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently detailed and illustrated 25 Nov 2013

Love this book. It's beautifully bound, designed, finished, written and illustrated. It's not really a childrens' book however it could be used as a bedtime book (albeit a scary one at times).

Top quality book that's going to last a long, long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully produced book 11 Dec 2006
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book, like the author's other work, the Annotated Fairy Tales, is a masterfully produced compendium of a great many of the Grimm's best tales. It also includes some of their less well-known and darker stories, which have been banished to the back. The illustrations are excellent, and unlike the Annotated Fairy Tales, generally quite large. Two things prevent me from giving it five stars: firstly, Tatar's annotations are in places plain irritating, reading too deeply into even the most banal sentences and phrases. The annotations appear alongside the text-- naturally enough, I suppose--but some are unsuitable for young children, particularly the references to menstruation and defloration, for example. I feel they might have been better presented as endnotes. So, if you're a parent and considering buying this book, bear that in mind. Otherwise, I'd recommend it: it's certainly great value for money, artfully produced and wonderful to hold.

Purchased as a collector's item this edition of the Brother Grimm is immaculate. The tales, both well known and obscure, are well presented, with some useful context and interpretations.
The highlight of this edition though is the presentation. It is a worthwhile addition to a book collection, with great illustrations and the feeling of quality befitting such infamous stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Modern bias 13 Jan 2008
By Sporus
Format:Hardcover
This is a handsome volume with some fabulous illustrations conjured up from 'grimoires' past. Be warned, though, that it is not a COLLECTED Grimm - you get only 37 of the 211 tales. Obviously the 'famous' stories feature in this selection (Rapunzel, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel...) but the more curious choices often feel to have been selected because they counteract the masculine pre-occupation of most folklore. Even the illustrations lean overly towards Kay Nielsen at the expense of Rackham, Goble, Crane etc.. It might be deprecatory, but it's an unfortunate fact that a lot of historical literature IS sexist and no amount of commentary can counteract the archetypal force of this. Tatar's enthusiasm often gives the lie to her academic aspirations and most readers of the footnotes will feel at times that they are being lectured on 'dark undercurrents' by a librarian in denial of her spinster status. Don't make it your ONLY copy of Grimm: but do buy it if you want to encourage publishers to keep making books that are beautiful objects even at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, meaningful 3 Sep 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The edition of the book is fabulous - from the lush looking dusk jacket to the dark navy covers of the book it's an absolute pleasure and luxury that one feels from the very first touch. The stories are also great - many of which were excluded in the previous Brother's Grimm editions due to it's contents. Therefore, one can say that the book is primarily dedicated to the adults. Stories feature extensive footnoting, which is helpful for a curious reader.
Our family got this book for baby's first Christmas, as we wanted something that would accompany her for many years to come. It is a meaningful book, looks very sturdy, is heavy and large, but these may very well be the reasons why it should be appreciated and loved in many families.

Simply a breath of fresh air in comparison with all the Disney Princesses stories.
Highly recommended for young and for old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grimm gift.
This was bought as a gift for a lover of Grimm's tales and a performing arts student. Certainly not the sugar coated fairy tales but a thoroughly appreciated and loved gift.
