An astonishing book.. 45 famous paintings from about 1400 to 1950, (all ones you are sure to recognise), each reproduced about A4 sized. With an explanation of why and when they were painted. Then each feature in the painting has a faint line leading off to a paragraph of notes in the margin, explaining it. What the feature is, and more importantly, what it symbolises. Because many paintings have a lot more in them than is first obvious. A very revealing and interesting book.

Fascinating book, with inspiring notes and comments on technical details of many famous paintings. There is a 'brother' edition which gives more details about the artists, but I found the details of the paintings themselves the most interesting and useful.
