4.0 out of 5 stars Great overall package, 2 Jul 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I just recieved this collectors edition and i must say it is an absolute treat. The box is wooden with real leather, the compass is presented in a weighty wooden case with a brass catch, the artwork book is outstanding and the almond seeds (sounds strange i know, getting excited about almond seeds!) come in a great little bag which would be typical of the era the game was set in. The box even smells old somehow!

The bonus DVD (which generally is filled with pretty useless stuff) is in this case also extremely good. The interviews from game producers explain in detail many of the effects used in the game, such as how they make those awesome water graphics. Very interesting stuff to those who are interested. There is some more lovely artwork on the DVD too and several tutorial's to help you grasp some of the more difficult concepts of the game. There is also a large posted bundled with the package.

The game itself is also very good with spectacular attention to detail graphically backed up by a solid learning curve and addictive nature. The difficulty level steadily rises and is well suited to players of all abilities as you can define it between easy, medium and hard with different conditions for progress on each level. There are also goals set within your personal profile to attain that will keep many gamers happy for a long time ranging from sinking a certain number of enemy ships to playing for a specific length on time and so on. The game is very atmospheric and clearly the developers have put a lot of time into getting a good balance between all parts of the game. The game largely focuses on the economic and diplomatic development of your people and probably its weakest area is its combat system. If you like blowing things up and planning cunnning tank attacks maybe look elsewhere, if you love city building and nuturing a thriving economy then this is right up your street.

Of course no review of this game is complete without making mention of the DRM 3 install activation limit. Yes it is unfair - it does restrict your ability to play a game you have paid for longterm but from what i have read in various forums getting "reactivated" should you ever need to is not such a terrible chore and having played the game i wouldn't let it put me off next time. I just hope the games industry see's sense on these things soon and stops applying this kind of penalty to the paying customer.

Overall for the extra five or so pounds the collectors edition will set you back i would definately recommend it. Normally collectors editions aren't really offering you anything more than the standard game but with this i was extremely impressed with the quality and feel of the whole package, especially considering the asking price. Go for it, if you like RTS games you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Limited Edition how I like it, 16 Jul 2009

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
First of all the game is fun and it has improved overall. The new complexity is wonderful and the two different kinds of populations give the whole game a new depth. But one fun-star has to be removed, because of the missing multiplayer part, which already was in the former title.

But what is really nice, that is the content of the collector's edition. You not just only get a bonus DVD and an artbook, but even a really nice compass, a poster and a veeeery nice tresaure box and of course the seeds.. though I do not really understand the meaning of them ;)

And the best is, it is really cheap!
