Reviews

This three-part drama sensitively portrays a teenage romance between an English boy and a Swedish girl. A joint Swedish-British production, Annika stars Jesse Birdsall and Christina Rigner alongside Bulman star Don Henderson, and was co-written by Colin Nutley, a multi-award-winning English director now living and working in Sweden. Nutley is highly acclaimed for his insightful treatment of the mores of his adopted country, and several of his films have been chosen to represent Sweden at leading international film festivals and at the Academy Awards. Eighteen-year-old Pete Daniels is spending the summer doing casual work on the Isle of Wight when he meets and falls in love with Annika, a fifteen-year-old language student. Their relationship quickly intensifies - but the time inevitably comes when Annika has to return to her homeland, and Pete makes a life-changing decision.

I was very pleased that this 1984 Channel 4 production has been issued on DVD. There has been a consistent internet speculation over the years as to whether it would be issued. Some inferior quality "bootleg" copies of the TV series have been previously circulated but at last there is a reasonable if not perfect print.

The theme of "Annika" is first love and as such is universal in its appeal. We all have this experience and it is so intense and bitter sweet that we remember it for the rest of our lives.

The story of Pete and Annika is very well scripted and performed and expertly captures the supreme happiness of fresh love and the heartstopping pain that can be associated with it.

I do not want to give away the plot except to say that it is set in the Isle of Wight in England in the mid 1980's and where a lively young but directionless lad, Pete, meets a Swedish girl, Annika, who is visiting England with her school friends to study English. Pete is experienced sexually but has never had his emotions engaged before. His meeting with Annika changes this and Pete soon realises that his selfish sexual life will never be the same again.

There is a very apt soundtrack which heightens the emotions involved as well as some lively pop music by the Waltons.

I strongly recommend this DVD.

At last this excellent series is finally released on DVD. i remember watching the original series on Channel 4. The plot is well described elsewhere so won't go into it too much. i remember at the time how emotional i felt, i could easily relate to what they were going through, and i have no doubt you will too. it may bring a tear to your eye. Somehow the writer/s and director have managed to capture all that is great about your first true love, as well all the heartache it brings. superb acting all round. Everything seems to be just right, and captures the 80's perfectly. This is a must see.

Really great to see this again, I have been waiting for this to be released for ages.
Although last time I saw this I was a teenager I was not disappointed now due to overly rosy memories, I was just reminded why it had appealed to me so much then. Great story, great casting, great atmosphere.
It really is good!

Perhaps like most I am of the era that remembers this mini series, and purchased nostalgically. However I was pleased to see that the program had lost none of its rough charm. I had forgotten the band in the plot, and so happily tracked then down using the internet. I loved this program when it came out in the early 80's, and enjoyed watching it with the benefit of 25 years of maturity behind me since then...Maybe the plot meanders a bit, but recommended if you want to recall the sunny days of summer 83, and the now old BMW Motorcycle featured.

I remember watching this series back in 1984 and like many, I was at the age where such a topic hit home. I was interested then, almost 30 years later to watch this again and try and jog my memories of this drama and how it made me feel.

The plot is one that many of us will be familiar with. Eighteen year old Pete, working in Brighton falls for fifteen year old Swedish exchange student Annika. When she returns to Stockholm, he decides to uproot and follow her there, but as is often the case, holiday romances aren't quite the same when you get home and the realities of life also have to be dealt with. Once in Sweden, Pete struggles with the language, finding a job, taking up Annika's study time and the inherent age differences and expectations, leading to a bittersweet, truthfully poignant finale.

This drama gives a great snapshot of the 1980s and will be a nostalgic revisit of their own teenage feelings for many.

Dated very very well (apart from 16 mm film stock) still relevent, a contemporary look at relationships that inevitably become long distance after the holiday romance, and all the problems arising when one of the involved leave and move to another country (sweden) there is hope at the end but only after an unfortunate accident, surprising just how many clothes styles still around today, annika looks quite modern herself in 1984, even I have three quarter length capri pants in black still lol, the swedish were quite modern modern people and society back in '84 compared to us generally it shows in comparison to the uk every day people, and that's part the story too the class difference as it were, a good show Still, and it still relates to young people generally feelings wise I'd say, when your young and starting to grow up and become more independant.
I enjoyed this, the theme music was nice too.

This has to be the most romantic film I've ever seen. The cultural nuances of an ordinary London lad (a young Jesse Birdsall) desperate to impress Annika (Christiana Rigner) and her parents in Sweden had me on the edge of my seat and there won't be a dry eye in the house by the finish, trust me! The film had me doing searches across the globe for other Nutley films.

I loved this programme when it was on the 1st time & cannot understand why it has never been repeated & so was so glad that it came out on DVD. Brought back happy memories of holidays on the Isle of Wight too! Such a sweet, "innocent" drama that seems of a different time even tho' it was only in the 80's but you can watch it over & over. The title music is great too. A lovely DVD.
