5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff. 22 May 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
More reminiscent of earlier albums if you ask me,like Refresh the Demon and Remains, but delivered like the newer material and in places it actually reminded me of Slammer's Nightmare Scenario, vocally at least,It's hard to imagine an Annihilator album without Dave Padden,He even sounds scarily familiar on the cover of Romeo Delight,He's made his mark over the last few and hopefully the 'revolving door' has stopped.
As for the boxset,it's a sturdy 'clam' with a keyring,3 badges and a sheet of stickers, just the one disc not 2 as it says above, excellent, now I've got to find somewhere to put it safe as it's way too big to go in my CD rack,so was Metal...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Great Modern Thrash 12 July 2010
By Gentlegiantprog TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There is a lot to enjoy about Annihilator's self titled effort, their thirteenth studio album and fourth full length with vocalist/guitarist Dave Padden, who is now the band's longest serving member besides founder and primary songwriter Jeff Waters.

'Annihilator,' as an album is probably as close to perfect as you can get; with superb production, musicianship and Dave Padden's vocals which suit the band so well. The album's only drawback is that it may not have that special something which elevates it from technical perfection to classic record status, but don't let that put you off, this is one fantastic record and if you haven't been keeping up with the band's more recent work then this is the perfect album to return to the band with.

The album is littered with sixty six guitar solos (or so the sticker on the case claims) and this may leave some listeners worried about variety; but the rest of the songs, with their mixture of classic thrash riffs and mid paced groove metal influenced sections, the mixture of harsh, clean and gang vocals and the fact that Dave Padden had some songwriting credits on the album as well as Jeff Waters results in an album where variety is not an issue, yet still has a concise and unified feel.

The album opens up with the fast and aggressive 'The Trend,' a song which seemingly decries new bands adopting the classic thrash metal sound, while I'm not sure I agree completely with the sentiment on offer, the song is an absolute stormer and one of the most dynamic openers of an Annihilator album in recent memory.

3.0 out of 5 stars Blowing Hot And Cold 7 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
'There are 66 solos on this album' boasts the sticker. I have to admit that Jeff Waters is on fine form on this self titled release. For myself it's at the expense of the song writing which has its moments but sadly not enough for me to mark it higher than a 3. The album starts really well with a couple of blasters relying on fast thrashing rhythm style chugging, ala Slayer, rather than clever riffage of songs such as Fun Palace and My Precious Lunatic Asylum, but this isn't a critisism just an observation. Dave Padden is a great vocalist and it's nice to see him hanging around. See him on youtube and he can sing and play Annihilator music, quite a feat indeed. After the first 3 tunes it's very much a mixed bag. Betrayed is ok without taking the roof off, 25 Seconds is a disjointed mess, Death In Your Eyes perhaps should be earlier in the track listing and The Other Side sounds at odds with the rest of the album. It's only 9 songs with a (an excellent) cover of Van Halen Romeo's Delight, and at the end I was asking myself 'was that it?'.

The shredding and Dave Padden are the highlights here and is a good antidote to the arguably overblown 'Metal'. Will I still be spinning it in the future like Never Neverland or Waking The Fury? Possibly but not as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars IMMENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD
This album is the dog's bollocks!!!! The riffs are just swift and slick as! And the structures of the songs are just pure genius. Twin lead guitar and solos that are just to die for. The last song is like listening to Van Halen. Jeff Water's choice of tone and style just states the fact that he's a huge Van Halen fan. Love this album
