Biography

At first, the Pistol Annies seemed almost too good to be true. Here was a one-of-a-kind band begun out of the blue by one-of-a-kind singers and songwriters Miranda Lambert, the proven chart-topper of the group, and Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe, who’d accumulated their share of credits in Nashville, a band whose 2011 debut album Hell on Heels was a fantastically feisty breath of ... This is the second Pistol Annies album, in which Miranda Lambert is the most famous member, but Ashley Monroe and Angeleena Presley share in writing and singing all the songs. There are no covers or songs written by others here. The music is excellent, and is about as country as you're likely to find recorded on a major Nashville label these days.

Among the songs, some of them come across as fun songs that possibly hide serious issues. Hush hush, released as a single, is about a family with one member coming out of rehab. Unhappily married, a song that a lot of people could identify with, is about a marriage that has problems but not enough to cause a split. Both of these songs are presented in a fun, entertaining way. Another fun song, but without any issues, is Being pretty ain't pretty. It is about the time and money that women sometimes spend on looking good.

The most serious songs here are Trading off one heartbreak for another, about a couple breaking up leaving the child fatherless, and Dear sobriety, about alcoholism. However, even these songs are done very differently from the way that (for example) Tammy Wynette would have done.

Yes, this is a fun, modern country album that sometimes but not always draws on traditional themes, presenting them in a way that most contemporary listeners want to hear, but which should also appeal to older listeners who enjoy top quality music without worrying too much about categories.

After falling in love with their first album, was worried that the second wouldn't live up to it.
From the uptempo Hush Hush and Unhappily Married you feel the reality of women living life filled with ordinary people and the baggage and stupid situations they bring, and the slower songs just bring the pain of living to life, and then they throw in some fun like I Feel A Sin, that just makes you smile as you sing along.
Didn't think the Annies could get better, but this proves they can. I suspect that this, just like their first will remain a favourite for years to come.
Buy it, you'll enjoy it!

Miranda Lambert is the superstar member of this group having had much success as a solo artist but she does not take centre stage in this group. She shares with Ashley Monroe (who has a great album out 'Like a Rose') and Angeleena Presley. It really is a proper integrated group effort. Their debut was excellent, this is even better. It is fiesty and fun with songs fast and slow about love and loss and life. All with a great country backing. The singing is great as solo or when harmonising. The songs are as country as they come. Thoroughly enjoyed tis album. Not going to pick out any song in particular as I thought them all good. Country music up to date, relevant and enjoyable. One of the albums of the year? Highly recommended to those that like great country music with a bit of fiestiness.

I agree with the enthusiastic reviews here - this is hugely enjoyable album of very good songs, very well performed. There's a good variety here and many of the songs are intelligently aimed at targets like the beauty industry (Being Pretty Ain't Pretty), the hypocrisy sometimes concealed by religiosity (Hush Hush), a song called Unhappily Married which speaks for itself, and so on.

The singing is exceptionally good with three fine performers giving great individual performances and really good close-harmony stuff with a strong country feel but also elements of blues, jazz and even rock in various places. The band are terrific - tight, sensitive and full of guts when needed - and the production shows off each song at its best.

I think this is album is a genuine bit of class among the best of the great amount of good (and not-so-good) Country/Americana around just now. Very warmly recommended.

Has everything, from the hearfelt pain of 'Trading One Heartbreak For Another', to the acoustic bluesy opening of 'I Feel A Sin Comin' On' and the trademark biting humour of 'Hush Hush'.

I bought this CD after listening to the PA's first Hell On Heels. I prefer the first album, because there is something not quite as punchy about this one. I cant really put my finger on it. Is it the songs themselves, or the arrangements that are just a touch too overdone? Its good, but somehow not quite as edgy as Hell On Heels, and the songs not quite as memorable. Sorry girls.

My sister liked this cd and was pleasantly surprised that I picked this for her. I've earned a few brownie points I reckon.
