Love Shirley Hughes's books, they are perfect little cameos of children at play. The illustrations are the first thing to capture the eye, especially of young children, toys and pets; there is that general chaotic untidiness children create when at play. Bought Shirley Hughes for my daughter when she was little years ago, and now with four grandchildren will buy them for the youngest - they have become classics.

I have a son and daughter similar in age to Alfie and Annie Rose. Everything to do with Alfie is loved in our house, but none more than this book. It is the book I brought my son when his little sister arrived and it showed him how special it is to have a sibling. This book is so touching and so sweet that I am tearful every time I read it. I cannot imagine a child growing up without the books of Shirley Hughes. And her "Babies need books" volume should also be given to every new parent! She is a national treasure.
