From Amazon.co.uk

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her", answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots", and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something". Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

From the Back Cover

Megan Follows, Tony award winner Colleen Dewhurst (A Moon For the Misbegotten, Annie Hall) and Academy award nominee Richard Farnsworth (Comes a Horseman, The Grey Fox, The Natural) give unparalllaled performances in this critically acclaimed motion picture, based on the international best-selling novel. Filmed amidst the spectacular scenery of Prince Edward Island, Canada, this award-winning movie follows the enchanting life of orphan Anne Shirley (Follows), from her struggles as an adolescent to her triumphs as a young woman. A delicate epic full of wit, style and emotional power.

I first saw Anne of Green Gables many years ago when it was first made. I was only a youngster then and loved it. Now I have the DVD, and love it even more! Anne Shirley is a young orphan girl who is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables and soon establishes herself as a girl with a great talent for getting herself into all kinds of scrapes and funny mini-adventures, along with her 'bosom friend' Diana Barry. Her relationship with Gilbert Blythe, the handsome young brainbox of her class develops from a childish rivalry into a beautiful friendship (which continues in the Sequel - but that's another story). The casting for this film was perfect. Though I have not read any of the books, Megan Follows is the perfect Anne of Green Gables as far as I'm concerned, and Colleen Dewhurst gives a flawless performance as Marilla. The other cast members are also wonderful, but the two I've mentioned are exceptionally good. The whole story is set in the beautiful scenery of what is supposed to be Canada's Prince Edward Island. This film is just a fantastic feel-good film that makes you grateful to be alive and grateful for your loved ones, the sort of film that we don't tend to see made anymore - A must-have for the family collection.

The DVD itself is double-sided since the whole production comes to over 3 and a half hours. There's a very brief 'making of' only about 3 minutes long, Megan Follows' audition for the part of Anne (not terribly exciting), some deleted scenes and cast biographies. There's also a director's commentary, though I can only seem to access that on the 2nd side of the disc and can therefore only hear what he has to say about the second half of the film. It may be that I'm just not doing something right, but really I don't care too much about that. It's the film itself that I bought this for and I am not at all disappointed there. A wonderful production all-round (with a beautiful musical score too). Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Version of All Time Classic! 6 May 2007

I doubt if a better version of the much loved Anne of Green Gables books has ever or will ever be made. The casting is sublime - Megan Follows is Anne in spirit and looks and the early episodes bring the books to vivid, colourful life. The Canadian countryside is stunning and with excellent portrayals of Matthew & Marilla, Gilbert Blythe, Diana and the other favourites, this is a DVD to curl up and enjoy again and again.

The story is faithfull to the books for the first DVD and the sequel, however the continuing story is written independently but is still enjoyable as Anne and Gilbert live through the horrors of WW1, and Diana and her husband as well as catty Josie Pye are on hand to draw us into the next tales.

The actual DVD does have some glaring faults. To offer no subtitles in this day and age is unforgiveable - the lack of chapter selection means that re-watching your favourite (weepy!)scenes is a fiddly process, but I am pleased to report that unlike one reviewer of the individual DVD's I found that there were no problems whatever with the speech and the picture going out of sync.

Every household should have a copy of this classic. It is one to watch again and again with family and friends of all ages!

Anne of green gables touched my heart as a little girl. Both through the books and the through this wonderful rendition. Megan Follows is perfect as Anne. I loved this series so much I went to Prince Edward Island and pretended I was Anne on the lake of shining water and the beaches.(Albeit my hair is a mousy brown not red)

I will admit that the continuing story is a little on the naff side. The beautiful Gilbert goes off to war. Blah - Don't think so.

But Anne and the Sequel cannot ever be improved upon in my eyes

Buy it, Watch it and immerse yourself in all things Anne. Perfect for a wet winters afternoon.
