Given that we have such a full and moving account of her short life from Anne Frank herself in Anne Frank's Diary, do we need a biography as well? In fact this book is an excellent companion, providing a picture of the political situation at the time and of the harrowing events after the diary ends. It takes the form of a commentary on key passages from Anne's diary. Two things help young readers with this challenging book: first, the clearly defined chronological structure; second, the rich assembly of annotated photographs, including many published for the first time, of Anne, her family and the world they experienced. The first pages are devoted to Anne's 13th birthday in 1942 when she receives the little red checked diary, the writing of which becomes such a great comfort. This book communicates the privations suffered by the people hidden away; we learn about the texture of their lives, their communal meals and how they relied on their helpers to bring food and household essentials.

The toxic combination of boredom and fear experienced by Anne and her companions is well conveyed but there is also humour and light relief. Above all, young readers will discover how illuminating biographical writing can be.
