Brief essays on such topics as Hitler's rise to power, war refugees, and the Jewish ghettos and concentration camps, are intercut with the story of Anne and her family, placing Anne's life in historical perspective. Also includeded are previously unpublished excerpts from Anne's diary revealing her thoughts about falling in love and the tensions that arose in the cramped quarters that eventually housed members of three families.
