5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 31 May 2014

Written in 1908 by Canadian Lucy Maud Montgomery, it is the story of an 11 year old orphan called Anne (with an “e”) who is adopted by an elderly brother and sister who wanted a boy to help out on their farm. They get sent Anne by mistake and only intend to keep her for a short while but eventually grow very fond of her and so decide to keep her.
Anne is very imaginative, talks incessantly and is very opinionated and that gets her into a lot of trouble - both at school and at home. She is obsessed with her appearance (red hair and freckles) and yearns to have clear skin and black hair – like her best friend and “kindred spirit” Diana.
The story is set in the town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island in Canada. We meet lots of the people who live in the village and get to know Anne’s friends and her worst enemy Gilbert Blythe...
Unlike today’s literature, the books are not about discos, boys, computers, alcoholic mothers and absent fathers. It goes back to a more innocent time and yet the stories are still relevant today. Anne wants the latest fashions, wants to look pretty and even gets Diana drunk on currant wine (that Anne thinks is a cordial).
There are spiteful girls, snobby old ladies and wonderful descriptions of the beautiful island. The book is funny but is also very sad in places. It is also a romance but so much more appealing and innocent than the romances depicted in modern literature aimed at teenagers today.
If you enjoy well-written, exciting novels that can transport you out of this time into a more romantic world of puffed-sleeved dresses and strict morals then this is the book for you. (The other books in the series are equally as good.) I would recommend these books for anyone aged 11+ (even adults!) though any confident younger readers would enjoy it too! Definitely one of the best series of books ever!

Very excited when I saw this full set of 'Anne' books. I read them in my early teens (I'm sixty now) and loved them. I managed to borrow most of them from the local library. I introduced my daughter to them and she also loved them. She is now in her thirties and also has this Kindle set. They are even better second time around as as I better appreciate her beautiful descriptive writing.
