Review

'If the Annapurnas present an enticing goal, there can be no better source of information than Kev Reynolds's Annapurna - A Trekker's Guide. ... Each trek has been thoroughly researched and lovingly described ... bringing back fond memories and recalling detail I found impossible to fault.' (Lindsay Griffin, High) 'This is a good guide book covering all the essentials and a bit more which still manages to be almost pocket sized.' (Julie Carter, The Pinnacle Club Journal) 'Kev describes the beauty and fascination which make this region such an attractive destination for the trekker. If a reader were in any doubt about undertaking a trek in the area, the author's enthusiasm for the region and its people clearly extols its merits, but if this were not enough the excellent photographs will clinch the deal. ... While the guide gives clear specific directions, its principal strength lies in the additional information it provides the visitor about the history of the area, the activities of the local people, their religion, ecology, the history of exploration and mountaineering, and much more. ... This is an excellent book. If you are going to the area, buy it. If you are just researching a trip, buy the book and reserve the tickets, it will get you hooked.' (Stewart MacKenzie, The Leader)

Product Description

Seen from the lakeside town of Pokhara in central Nepal, a tremendous wall of snow and ice-capped mountains dominates the northern horizon - the Annapurna Himal. With no less than 12 summits topping 7000m (23,000ft) soaring above a foreground of intricately terraced foothills, this is one of the most beautiful and ethnically diverse landscapes on earth. Around this island block goes the route of the classic Annapurna Circuit - one of the great walks of the world. Into the heart of these mountains another trekker's trail leads to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Through the world's deepest valley, between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, goes the Pilgrim's Trail to Muktinath, while the Ghandruk Foothill Trek provides an introduction to some of the best of Nepal's hill villages and mountain views. Kev Reynolds describes each of these treks with full route details for 'tea-house' trekkers and those journeying with and organised group. Information with regard to lodges, tea-houses and villages is provided; there are sections on how to plan a trek, where and when to go, permits and preparations, health matters, an equipment check list and, of equal importance, how to avoid giving offence to the local people. Outline suggestions are offered for other treks in the region, and details of Trekking Peaks are also given. This is a new, full-colour edition of an established guide.

We had two guidebooks and ended up using almost exclusively this. I liked how the information is laid out and structured. The trek is broken down into sections, rather than days, so it's easier for you to set your own pace. The book has a lot of information about the trail and some interesting bits about culture in the Annapurna area and the history of the region's exploration. It describes the villages well in terms of their geographical location and what services/resources are available, and it gives an approximate number and style of the accomodation availabe but does not recommend any particular lodges or restaurants. I liked this a lot, as the quality of accommodation is notoriously prone to change.

Our only concern was the timings of the sections. Although I would like to consider our group of three rather fit, we were really struggling to make it even within the upper limit of the times given in the book for each section. I think the only time we managed to beat Kev's time was when we run down the 3000 stone stairs from Gorepani...

Excellent guide book 23 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Most people would hire a guide to do the trek, but for those who, like me, carried his back pack and had to find accommodation every night it was a good investment.
The path is unmissable, just one winding track by the river, but the book gives you some additional relevant information that you wouldn't find in the usual maps that you buy in Kathmandu, like size of the villages, relevant points, information about the area...
They only suggestion is a kindle or android compatible version. That woudl do me!

We bought this book based on other's reviews, but to be honest I was disappointed. Having been to Nepal a few times before, and wanting to put together a trek which would introduce my children (13, 11 and 8) to the Annapurnas, I wasn't planning to do the circuit or Annapurna Base Camp, but a combination of the Naya Pul/Poon Hill and the ABC walk taking in Chomrong, Ghandruk and Landruk and involving minimal backtracking. To do this, I had to go back and forth in the book constantly reading paragraphs from different sections and reading them in reverse etc. to work out the route. This could have been much simpler just with the inclusion of a basic map of the whole area, which is missing (there are just maps for stages of each walk). In actual fact we walked out from Lhandruk/Tolka on a route not even mentioned in the book, which we found out about by buying a 1:50,000 map of the area in Kathmandu and then by talking with some of the local villagers - and this stage of our walk was one of the trek highlights as it took in genuine unspoilt villages and didn't have any other westerners on it. On the plus side, we found the hours between villages/teahouses to make planning our day's route easy, and gave us confidence that we would find somewhere to stay even if we didn't stay in the 'main' tea house settlements. We also found, unlike some other reviewers, that his timings matched our walking pace (even with our children) and that sometimes we took less time than he outlined. So in summary, I would be very confident of using the book to walk the traditional treks in the Annapurnas, but for non-standard routes, a map and talking to the locals would take a lot less time than reading his book and may well give more options. My final point is that the book would benefit from having slightly more information about accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara (as well as maps of these towns, showing the position of the bus stations/tourist bus 'stations'/departure points for example).
