I have been taking portraits of individuals and families for about four years now but I still found lots of new and useful tips in this book. It was an easy read, with plenty of examples and images to make the advice clear. No confusing technical explanations, just straight forward, practical steps to help you to take more professional looking photographs.

After finishing the book (which only took a few hours) I had lots of new things to try out next time I took out my camera and I've definitely seen an improvement in my results.

I was at first sceptical of this book as a recent review had mentioned that it was suited towards female photographers! However, having browsed an earlier book by Annabel (and seen her own feedback on Amazon's comments page) I ordered the book. I was initially perplexed by the book which goes against many of the established 'laws' of photography - however, this is where Annabel's contemporary views come to the fore. I've stopped spending hours in front of my computer and have got back to basics. This book has encouraged me to go out and photograph, always looking for ordinary locations which can make superb backgrounds. Her simple yet constructive advice regarding backgrounds, lighting, direction, photoshop etc has brought the fun back to photography. Well done Annabel - I will be signing up for your bespoke course very soon!!

I disagree with the above negative comments. I'm a Children's Portrait Photographer and have just finished reading this book. I found it extremely useful and inspiring. Packed with stunning, alternative shots. If you're looking for a real technical based book then this isn't for you. I think too many people get lost in the technical and gear side of photography. Portrait photography is not about the gear it's about the people and that's exactly what this book explores. Clearly written and beautifully presented. If you really want to take stunning, creative people shots then this is the book I would recommend.

Disappointing geared towards a 12 year old
I bought this book and wish I hadn't.

Very basic gives no insight into professional photography and basically belittles and devalues the photographic industry. Read more
