anna, giovane novizia, e' un'infermiera caritatevole e zelante. una notte giunge all'ospedale un ferito grave in cui anna riconosce andrea, il giovane al quale s'era promessa prima di darsi alla vita religiosa. mentre il primario opera il ferito, le immagini d'un passato non lontano si ripresentano alla mente dell'infermiera. anna si rivede ballerina in un locale notturno: a quel tempo era l'amante di vittorio, l'addetto al bar, uomo crudele e cinico. avendo conosciuto andrea, giovane buono, moralmente sano, s'era innamorata di lui e per sottrarsi al dominio di vittorio, s'era rifugiata nella fattoria dell'amato. l'intervento di vittorio aveva provocato una lotta violenta, durante la quale andrea, per difendere anna, aveva ucciso vittorio. anna, rimasta ferita nel conflitto, aveva deciso di prendere il velo. ora l'animo della novizia e' combattuto tra l'amore che si risveglia e il dovere: andrea, convalescente, le domanda di sposarlo ed anna e' sul punto di cedere, quando giunge notizia d'un grave disastro ferroviario e numerosi feriti vengono portati in ospedale.

"ANNA" 1951, B&W, Italian, starred lovely Silvana Mangano[as Anna], Raf Vallone, Vittorio Gassman,
and in a very early film role Sophia Loren,[then billed by her real name, Sofia Scicolone], and she can
very clearly be viewed in a couple or so minor scenes. Sofia[Sophia]entered Italian films in 1950, as a
film "extra". This dvds front cover has pictured Salvana Mangano & Raf Vallone.
"ANNA" was produced by Silvana Mangano's producer husband Dino De Laurentiis, who in 1949, had made
"RISO AMORA" or "BITTER RICE" a classic & now famous breakthrough film for both De Laurentiis and his
wife Silvana in which she appeared in an extremely sexy role dressed in tight top & shorts/and torn black
stockings whilst working the paddy/rice fields of Northern Italy.
Carlo Ponti[remaining in the background in "ANNA", was also a producer friend of Dino De Laurentiis, and Carlo,
dating a young Loren, eventually married Sophia in 1957, by then SL had become a legendary name, not only in Italy,
but in Hollywood and around the world as well].
The Director of "ANNA" was Alberto Lattuada, and it would be another twenty years before SL took the lead role in a Lattuada film,
titled, "WHITE SISTER"[1972], which is also available on dvd.
This film is in superb print/sound condition. Language & subtitles are in Italian.

Why is this dvd not available in US DVD format ?????

I've been searching for this film on DVD for 5 years now. When is it ever going to be released in the USA? This was one of the first foreign films to be a major success in the US upon it's release here in 1953. Additionally, El Negro Zumbron (aka the Theme from Anna) was a top ten, million seller during the spring of 1953. With so many other lesser foreign films released on DVD, am confused as to why Anna has been thrown to the curb!

Anna is a wonderful movie. It has been very hard to find and hope someday it will be here in the USA. Silvana Mangano is a wonderful actress and very under rated. There are so many great Italian films that never get to the American viewer.

A great movie.

I first saw this movie when I was a teenager, (a long time ago).Not particularly the movie, but the song "Anna"has always been in my memory bank since my teen years. So much so, that at the time, I bought the recording of the song (on a 78rpm disc).I now wish that I still had it. I would certainly like to get a copy of the movie.I travell overseas quite often, so I just might be able to find a copy SOMEWHERE.
