5.0 out of 5 stars I Laughed 'til I cried 5 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Honestly, I thought Victor Borge on how to write an opera was the funniest musical sketch I'd ever seen until I saw Ms Russell's "How to Write a Gilbert & Sullivan Opera" (& I am a G&S fan). Her expressions (and the quick change hats) are priceless.
Wind Instruments I have known could be paired with Michael Flanders' paen to the French Horn - again, the visual version is superior to the CD because of her "dead pan" delivery.
The entire disc is a gem - I really couldn't stop laughing.

Buy it for the music lovers in the family & get a copy for yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful performance, but... 6 Jan 2006
By Doktor Futtocks VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Anna Russell deserves to be far more famous than she currently is. This DVD contains two of her signature routines; the DIY Gilbert & Sullivan and the side-splitting genius that is her analysis of Wagner's 'Ring' cycle.
The only thing holding me back from the full 5 stars is that this disc has performed 4 different ways in 4 different DVD players, ranging from normal playback, through distorted picture aspect, then monochrome to, in one brand-new multiregion player, a blank refusal to play at all. Caveat emptor.

I've been familiar with Anna Russell's shows for a long while on audio CD, and it was fascinating to put a face to the name - she's not at all how I imagined her! She is one of those unique entertainers who defies classification, but think along the lines of Joyce Grenfell crossed with Les Dawson and you won't go far wrong! This American recording from the 1980's includes her two famous set pieces - How To Write a Gilbert and Sullivan Opera, and An Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle, both of which are scathingly accurate and very funny. She obviously recites the whole show from memory - as the occasional lapses in this live recording prove! - which is a feat in itself. But for the Ring Cycle she accompanies herself on the piano - and at times her playing is pretty accomplished! The show finishes with an "authentic" Somersetshire folk song about an old sow which involves audience participation - and there can't be many shows that call for the suited middle class audience to snort and blow raspberries at the star!
