Product Description

Nicola Pagett stars as Anna Karenina in this classic BBC adaptation of Leo Tolstoy s epic tale of passion set in late nineteenth century Russia. Anna is young, vivacious, beautiful and resigned to a loveless marriage of convenience to a man twenty years her senior. She moves in the highest circles of Czarist Russia and believes herself to be invulnerable to temptation. But her life changes dramatically when she meets Count Vronksy who awakens her dormant passion and changes her life with ultimately tragic consequences. New look packaging for 2012

This adaptation of Anna Karenina is impressive. Perfectly casted with a wonderful Nicola Pagett as the eponymous heroine and a dashing and convincing Stuart Wilson as Vronsky, it's a stirring story of an impossible love triangle. It's beautifully set, conjuring up a genuine feel of Tsarist Russia. Nicola Pagett conveys all the emotions of the story perfectly, as do each of the other many wonderful actors in the story. Levin and Kitty's own love story is particularly touching and well acted by Robert Swan and Caroline Langrishe. Look out for little Paul Spurrier as Anna's son or the late Sheila Gish as Anna's superficial friend. This really is an absolute masterpiece that does justice to the deservedly famous novel and overshadows all the other lack-lustre adaptations.

The story of Anna Karenina, Tolstoy, is well known and the inter-relations of the different love stories
makes the book read fantastic. It is more enjoyable when you realise some of the characters are loosley based
persons who lived in the 1800's -I believe Anna's character is based on one of Pushkins (the great Russian poet) children - Maria.

So this great Novel, was shot by the BBC in the time when the budgets (just) allowed for period dramas to be made, during the 1970s' (yes that is over 30years ago!) AND IT IS ONE OF THE BEST!

As it is a period Drama it is ageless, the Actors and their acting were the best and if you are like myself who have a selection of DVD's which I review regularly, this should one of them. In fact I re-purchased this so I could get the set of three dvds together again [my mother or my wife (both who deny this!) sat one one of the DVD's and broke it in half - they then hid it - for them I say -> the truth will always be found].

I recently purchased this DVD based on my recollections of seeing this program back in the 70's, and I proceeded to reaquaint myself with this version with some trepidation. However my fears were soon put to rest and my rose coloured view has not been dimmed by time or memory. This is a wonderful series with great performances by accomplished actors, in particular Nicola Paget and Eric Porter, but the entire cast is strong. Its particularly pleasing to watch such as series where the actors bring their skills to the fore for the enjoyment of the viewer.

This was the first version of Anna Karenina I saw, at the age of 17, and as far as I'm concerned, the best. Ten one-hour episodes gives the story and characters time to develop, in a way a film treatment does not.

All the cast are excellent, whether in the major roles (Anna, Vronsky, Karenin) or the lesser but still important parts (Levin, Stiva, Prince Scherbatsky etc). The only jarring note is that Stuart Wilson, otherwise a consummate Vronsky (you can quite see why Anna falls for him - and why it's all going to end in tears), is no horseman. This is awkward, because Vronsky is supposed to be a steeplechase rider, and it also stands out because of all the attention to detail elsewhere.

This serial captures the book and all that makes Tolstoy such a brilliant observer of humanity. The serial starts slowly but builds episode by episode to the heartbreaking climax. There is not a bum note in the whole production. Nicola Paget is unforgettable, as are Stuart Wilson and Eric Porter. Even the little boy who plays Seriozha is wonderful and captures the pain and anger of his desertion brilliantly. Nothing is glossed over or simple. The complexity of human relationships are all there to look at and mull over. Nothing is black and white. Nobody is entirely good or entirely bad. There are no easy answers to the dilemmas posed.
This is a must own serial if you like a quality script, superb acting and plenty of food for thought. It is not for those looking for lots of action. This is about people and their relationships.

I saw this series when I was a mere twelve year old and it inspired me read the novel. It is the best adaption I have ever seen on Anna Karenina and the most faithful nothing else compares. The acting is outstanding and the costumes and scenery with attention to detail is incomparable. I urge anyone who appreciates the Russian classics to buy or borrow this masterpiece and share it with their children, friends or colleagues.

There is something in it for everyone. The costumes are breathtakingly beautiful. The hero and heroine are gorgeous and romantic. Most of all I appreciate the faithfulness to the text which the BBC approached in the making of this series. They did not decide like too many others since that they know more than the writer and butcher Tolstoy's work and quality with ruthless and irresponsible editing. I am delighted that this version has been restored and made available. Buy and enjoy.

This version of Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina' is over thirty years old. It was made at a time when the BBC had the resources to make such lavish serials. It was also a time when the BBC didn't 'dumb down 'the classics. It covers all aspects of the story and has large chunks of dialogue directly taken from the novel. The acting is excellent and Nicola Pagett skilfully portrays Anna's descent from poised sensible wife and mother to neurotic, guilt ridden, jealous tragic heroine. The story of Levin, of equal importance in the novel, is given equal time in this TV adaptation. The series gives an accurate picture of life in Czarist Russia among several different classes and does not shirk from developing philosophical ideas present in the novel. An enjoyable and thought provoking version of one of the greatest novels of all time
