An album full of dark mystery and stark arrangement. Calvi proves her credentials as a rising talent; powerhouse vocals and searing guitar work in equal measure. You will need to listen to this collection several times to truly appreciate its beauty.

I got hold of Anna Calvi's recent album "One Breath" after hearing the single "Eliza" and was very impressed. I thought, and still think, it's a very solid album although with the odd weak point. Following that I made a point of seeing her at Glastonbury a couple of weeks ago which utterly blew me away. On returning home I immediately purchased this album, and for the second time in a week I found myself blown away..
Elements of Ennio Morricone, Django Reinhardt, PJ Harvey and a varety of 1960s girl groups merge to form a fascinating debut album which definitely trounces the follow up which had introduced me to Calvi.
The guitar playing is sublime, the production is perfect, the voice is hauntingly beautiful while also being powerful and the songs range from dark, textured, filmic pieces to soaring alt-power pop. Despite it's stop-start production over the course of three years, it sounds utterly coherent as an album experience.
One of the best new things I've heard in ages - cannot recommend this enough!

Perfect for anyone who enjoyed tv's Hit and Miss show's soundtrack.

A unique sound.

Can't wait to hear it performed live in February 2014 at The Troxy, London.

Initial impression with this release was one of a slight disappointment. The backing seemed a bit too sparse & uninteresting & there was something slightly unappealing about Anna's voice....a little bit too upper class perhaps? So it lay dormant for many months and then after a recently concentrated re-listening have to say that it is an amazing & powerful album. Anna really has a strong voice plus coupled with some brilliant guitar sounds then now believe this to be something special. Things start though without a grand fanfare 'Rider To The Sea', 'No More Words' (it is growing), and it is via 'Desire' which starts to demonstrate some flair & so far is standout track. Next 'Suzanne & I' for me is not the strongest (though many seem to like this one even enough to be the 3rd vinyl 7" A side release off the album)...but then emerges 'First We Kiss' which is really brilliant. An emotional tour de force with some nice orchestral sounds over the indie style solid backing as Anna lets out her emotion & sings magnificently "a face against the window our lips touch no more". 'The Devil' more deliberate & slow continues this high "fall for me". Amazingly with few words in this number that it can put such strong feelings across. The interesting circular guitar strums coupled to the husky vocal creates an arresting beautiful melancholy before hitting a climax....astonishing piece. 'Blackout' (have this on 7") continues the high, another passionate & beautiful delivery - initially my preferred until the previous two snuck through. 'I'll Be Your Man' with some spaghetti-western guitar & 'Morning Light' with the harmonium as the key element both continue this atmospheric vibe. Finally 'Love Won't Be Leaving' with an interesting guitar percussion break ends the LP on a high. Passionate raw sensual songs of love falling somewhere between God & the Devil.

This is one of those cds that leave you breathless and makes you wonder what the hell could follow it.Her vocal range is so varied,so amazing and heartfelt. Her songs are all so powerful and emotional. She draws on music from decades ago as well as more recent and yet she emphatically puts her stamp on all the tracks. Her backing band are superb too and never swamp that magical voice. And as for her guitar playing, its totally brilliant, one moment soft and the next it becomes a weapon.I have been playing guitar for nearly forty years and am in awe at her ability, cant think of any better performance on any cd.Hope the next one comes quick-we all need more challenging and creative masterpieces like this

A tremendous debut record delivered with passion and power, which serves to allow you to ignore some of the inadequacies of the production values. For me the standout track is Desire with a real powerhouse vocal from Calvi which puts the hairs up on the back of your neck. The opener Rider to the Sea is an atmospheric instrumental which ends with a Django style flourish on the guitar. Calvi has a great voice, is nifty on the guitar and has great image to boot. Other great tracks are Blackout and Suzanne and I, but to be fair I enjoyed it all from start to finish. Some of the other reviews mention Patti Smith and PJ Harvey and I can't for the life of me hear this apart from in the production (Harvey's producer). I'm more inclined to towards the more grandiose David Bowie tracks, such as Wild is the Wind and the power of Edith Piaf as sources of Calvi's inspiration. In conclusion a great record from an artist who only get better.

First time I heard an Anna Calvi song I was bewitched by her enchanting haunting vocals. So as I was looking for something new to add to my favourites playlist daringly (for me) purchased the album. Not at all disappointed and recommend if you're looking for some alternative . Music which is . Peaceful yet passionate.
