Edit Please note this is for the older version, NOT for the new E version (despite what the Amazon page says). Also I corrected my maths, as pointed out by Ms L Atkins. Thanks for that, I missed out some brackets!
So how many times can you charge your phone? This battery is 70% efficient (nothing is ever 100%). According to their website (ianker.com) use this formula.
Capacity of the External Battery * 70% / Capacity of the Mobile Phone
So for my phone, HTC One V (1500 mAh battery) - (10,000 * 0.7) / 1500 = 4.66, or 4 full charges from 0% to 100% & 1 more charge from 0% to 66%
In testing I achieved 4 full charges from 0% to 100%, & 1 more charge from 0% to 54% before the Astro 3 was totally flat.
It took 2 1/2 hours to fully charge my phone using the S USB slot. It took 3 hours to fully charge my phone using the I USB slot.
(Using the wall charger that came with my phone, it takes 1 1/2 hours to charge my phone from 0% to 100%)
2 USB slots can charge up to 2A (@5V). USB Slot I is for Apple devices, USB Slot S is for Samsung (read Android) devices. Both slots work for any USB device I have tried that is 5V.
This also has a DC out slot that is switchable between 9V & 12V.
Your device will only draw UP TO the Amps that it is designed for. In other words if your wall charger is 1A 5V, it is ok to use this external battery, your device will only draw 1A. The external battery itself can supply up to 2A depending on your device, just make sure its 5V.
I also tried charging my netbook, an EeePC (1000HE) made by Asus, with an 8400 mAh battery that lasts for around 7 hours.Read more ›
I've previously owned one other small portable battery pack that was one of the lipstick-shape that didn't fully charge my Nexus 5 and I couldn't use the phones GPS / Web while charging because the battery pack wasn't capable of delivering that much power with the phone screen on. I decided I needed better quality and purchased the Anker 2nd Gen Astro E3 10000mAh battery pack.
The Anker battery pack is in a whole new league. It charges effortlessly, even while I use the phone. (If you use the GPS on your phone a lot, this battery pack is a great companion)
I originally purchased the 10000mAh model thinking that it would feel comparable in size and weight to a 5" display mobile phone (e.g. Nexus 5, iPhone 6). It's actually thicker than I expected and you can definitely feel the weight more so than a mobile phone although its not overly heavy, and it turned out that this is the size that I really needed. I think that if you're going to the effort of carrying an extra battery pack, its worthwhile to get a decent sized battery - I now know I can confidently go more than a day of very heavy mobile phone use when I have this battery pack around.
My first day of really using the 2nd Gen Astro E3 went something like this:
- Use my Nexus 5 mobile phone all morning on my long commute, with web & GPS, on way to a conference and arrive with 15% low battery warning.
- Plug phone into Anker to charge during first conference session.
- Mid-morning break, my phone fully charged.Read more ›
I own the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE (4G) which has a massive 3100mAh battery and the Anker can charge my Note 2 about 2.5 times.
Although this is only about 85% of the advertised mAh power of the Anker, this is perfectly normal for this type of device and above average. ;)
There's 2 USB output's so you can simultaneously charge 2 devices - although I only used the "Android" output for my phone.
The 2nd output is labelled "Apple" so it's cool that both formats are specifically supported for optimal (and safe) charging.
A small extendable USB cable and a collection of plug-adapters is supplied so you should be able to charge almost any mobile or tablet device out of the box.
Provided your device charge/data cable has a standard USB socket on one end, you should also be able to charge your device with the original cable if you prefer.
There's also a micro-USB socket on the side of the Anker unit, which is for charging up the Anker 10000mAh battery.
This is ideal for any Android devices as your phone/tablet charger and original-cable will work fine.
If you have an Apple device, you will still be able to charge up the Anker using your Apple charger, but will need to use the Anker cable + MicroUSB adapter plug.
This means you will need to swap plug adapters depending on whether you are charging your Apple device or re-charging the Anker, which is a slight faff.
Anker chose not to supply a mains adapter (presumably to keep costs down) and although this is OK, the recharge times for the 10000mAH Anker battery will vary depending what type of mains charger you already own. Some of the older smartphones (e.g.Read more ›
