Format: Audio CD
Ah yes, "Animotion" by Animotion - not to be confused with "Obsession" by Animotion, although it certainly did seem to confuse the UK arm of Mercury Records in 1985 when this first came out. My vinyl copy has the album called "Animotion" on the sleeve, but "Obsession" (presumably to cash in on the big hit) on the label. The CD version went with "Obsession" from the outset.

Anyway, to the music - this is a classic 80s album; a couple of good tracks and lots of generic filler that sounds like the band wrote and recorded it in their sleep. The opening track "Obsession" was a big hit, and has a nagging Synclavier part, boy-girl trading vocals and even (on the album version) a playout guitar solo. "Turn Around", track 5 was on the B-side of the Obsession single, and it's easy to see why - it's a slow-grower and buried in murky production, but underneath lies quite a decent song. It's about when to call 'time' on a relationship - or fling - and still resonates today.

Elsewhere it's rather hard to like the songs, but their sheer contrariness makes the album oddly compelling. "Fun fun fun" is such a pale imitation of the Beach Boys song of the same name - "Nobody's carrying guns/All we wanna do is have fun fun fun". Yeah, profound. "Tremble" has a nice piano intro but soon turns into a lumpen ballad. Elsewhere it's Fast-forward City on the CD-player.

Mercury seemed to specialise in these lo-cred or no-cred albums in the 80s (see "Count 3 and Pray" by Berlin - which is similar but much, much better). As long as you don't want a life-changing musical experience, "Animotion" is exactly what you'd expect.
