Biography

Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line-up comprised Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). They were dubbed "animals" because of their wild stage act and the name stuck. The ... Read more in Amazon's The Animals Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Twilight at its best 6 Jun 2013
Format:DVD
I watched this on sky arts, and it has gone immediately on my wish list, along with the other three Ring operas.
The staging with the rather strange swinging planks is absolutely excellent, with interesting projections, and optical delights. When I saw the "Making Of" I had thought "Oh Dear!" but in practise it works very well.
Lets start with The Norns, three complementary voices, and better staged than most.
Once more in the series Debra Voight and Jay Hunter-Morris are brilliant, with Voight my favourite Brunhilde and Hunter at least equal to Jerusalem.
I would single out the Rhine journey, The horse Grane is the star, he is the first to my knowledge to make a personal appearance, and on the boat. Very brilliant he is too.
The Gibichung trio too are par excellence, Hans-Peter Konig as Hagen is very good both in voice and characterisation, come to think of it every Hagen is very good, must be something to do with this dark role. Iain Paterson is really fine as Gunther, He gets more out of the role than in any other version, and his voice is pretty good too. I had thought that Eva Marie Westbroek in the Staatsoper production was the best Gutrune. Along comes Wendy Bryn Harmer, and she more than does credit to the role.
Erin Morley is an able Waltraute, and does credit to this small role.
The Gibich vassals give some rousing choruses, enough to stir the blood, and ably backed by the competent orchestre.
Just to mention some noteable scenes, Brunhildes betrayal and Siegfriedes defence is very absorbing. In the Rhinemaidens scene with Siegfried I love the way they slide into the water, their voices are nicely matched too, lovely sounds when in group.
