HASH(0x8e58ce10) out of 5 stars Pretty book 27 Oct. 2011
By M. Heiss - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Setting the stage with the Silk Road and desert caravens, this book puts COlumbus's voyages in context for young readers.

VERY interesting information on the Sargasso Sea makes this book stand out from the rest.

Mild and non-controversial, this book is good for reading aloud with a smaller child or for an early grades report. And that Sargasso Sea page is interesting for everyone in the family.

This was a very nice spin on the story of Christopher Columbus :-). My 6 year old enjoyed learning about this story and the animals kept her interested. Would have like to have found more angles for children to read on this tale. If anyone has some suggestions, I would be very interested to check them out.

Thanks :-)

This small book is a rather informative read about Christopher Columbus’s time, journey, ships and many of the animals they acquired or witnessed along the way. I had read several picture books about Columbus and his famous, albeit accidental, discover of the America’s but never one quite like this. Did you know there is such a thing as ship worms that eat away holes in the wood? Or that 3,000 silk worms must die to make 1 yard of silk??? The lovely illustrations and informative text make this a wonderful addition to any elementary/middle school library or classroom.
