A first step on the Shamanic Path, 24 May 2009
This review is from: Animal Spirit Guides: How to Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic Path (Hardcover)
Shamanism is most likely derived from the earliest spiritual practices of mankind and exists today in the lives of some tribal people but for ourselves mostly as a distant memory. This book aims to help the readers to discover for themselves whether the teachings that the author has gathered over 20 years of instruction with tribal Shamen have any resounance and meaning. The author is keen to point out from the start that no one should give away self-respect and self-authority to a book, tecaher, partner, religion, church, job or anything else. This caution sets the tone for a book that clearly sets out some of the basic approaches to the Shamanic Path without resort to the overwhelming ego that is unfortunately quite common in writings on this and similar subjects. A simple series of exercises are given that allow the reader to safely begin to become sensitive to the quiet voices that surround us and to explore for themselves the depth of learning that is available in our dreams and from a deeper heart connection with our environment.
The main topic of the book is the learnings that we can take from animals. Each short piece on over 60 different animals is prefaced with the author's own personal experiences with them and goes on to discuss the wisdom drawn from his teachers. This is achieved in a balanced way without excessive direction but with sympathy and respect for the beauty of the natural world.
Chris Lüttichau is one of the most respected Shamanic Teachers currently practising in Europe and this book is an excellent primer for those interested in whether Shamanism has any meaning for them but also as a source of context for those already on the path. Other books such as "Shamanism as a spiritual practice for daily life" by Tom Cowan and "Dancing the Dream" by Jamie Sams cover similar ground in detail but, particularly the latter, may be less accesible to the general reader.
Finally, those who feel some resounance for them in this book will find it much easier to make further progress along the path by working with a teacher that they trust and with groups of others also seeking the path. Shamanism has been handed on by word of mouth and personal experience for eons and is in danger of becoming a dogma when it is recorded on a page. This book is carefully written to avoid as much of this as possible. Heed the author's warning at the start of this book and enjoy what it may bring to you.
