20 of 21 people found the following review helpful By Richard Brown on 24 May 2009
Format: Hardcover
Shamanism is most likely derived from the earliest spiritual practices of mankind and exists today in the lives of some tribal people but for ourselves mostly as a distant memory. This book aims to help the readers to discover for themselves whether the teachings that the author has gathered over 20 years of instruction with tribal Shamen have any resounance and meaning. The author is keen to point out from the start that no one should give away self-respect and self-authority to a book, tecaher, partner, religion, church, job or anything else. This caution sets the tone for a book that clearly sets out some of the basic approaches to the Shamanic Path without resort to the overwhelming ego that is unfortunately quite common in writings on this and similar subjects. A simple series of exercises are given that allow the reader to safely begin to become sensitive to the quiet voices that surround us and to explore for themselves the depth of learning that is available in our dreams and from a deeper heart connection with our environment.

The main topic of the book is the learnings that we can take from animals. Each short piece on over 60 different animals is prefaced with the author's own personal experiences with them and goes on to discuss the wisdom drawn from his teachers. This is achieved in a balanced way without excessive direction but with sympathy and respect for the beauty of the natural world.

Chris Lüttichau is one of the most respected Shamanic Teachers currently practising in Europe and this book is an excellent primer for those interested in whether Shamanism has any meaning for them but also as a source of context for those already on the path.

This is a wonderful book- which is a good size, both small and light. Chris gives personal insights and encounters into the animals listed as well as his take on their respective meaning. The size and shape is important as it means it is transportable so it will fit into a rucksack nicely and can be used as a field reference guide, giving you the chance to gather a collective meaning on what the animal represents and then interpreting the particular animal encounter into your own personal meaning/significance. There is also a beautiful introduction into the art of shamanic practices and thought as well as exercises on how to establish a connection with your own spirit animal.

Format: Hardcover
The native americans say we can have as many as 10 power animals. These animal spirits help and guide us and protect us in our day to day lives pretty much as our spirit guides do. This book explains how to travel thru meditiation into the underworld and other dimensions to meet your power animals. Very interesting and informative book, even if you keep seeing a particular animal or insect and all you want to do is look up what the message is from that animal. If you are into this sort of stuff you can go into as deeply as you wish.

A gentle introduction to the shamanic path. Included are exercises for the reader to use to start discovering their path. This book puts forward the basic priciples and gives enough information to understand them. The descriptions and meanings of the animal spirit guides is good and the art work is lovely. I would say overall a good place to start. The book however would have little interest for those who are on the path but some may find it useful if they are guiding the younger members of our community.
