Biography

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, USA, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first… Read more in Amazon's R.E.M. Store

4.0 out of 5 stars What's the big deal?, 9 Mar 2004
This review is from: Animal (Int'L Enhanced Maxi Single 42706) (Audio CD)
R.E.M's new single "animal" is well worth the money. The song itself is one of their best for years. The B-sides are reasonable, a live version of "Pretty Persuation" and a live video of Losing my Religion from the Weisbaden concert during their 2003 world tour. This video however is contained on the "Perfect Square" concert DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly refined version, 6 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Animal (Int'L Enhanced Maxi Single 42706) (Audio CD)
The majority of people who heard the song “Animal” on R.E.M.’s “In Time: The Best of R.E.M.” compilation were disappointed. I was extremely disappointed, as the song sounded to rough around the edges and the tune just didn’t get me absorbed. After listening to the song many times, it has become one of my favourite R.E.M. songs of late, and this is because “Animal” has such an odd yet original tune. The most persistent listener will be able to see what I love so much about this song.

However, that was the “In Time” version. That version was quite flawed, and many people, including the band themselves, realised this. This single version of “Animal” is a refined version of the “In Time” version, albeit better. The vocals have been improved drastically in the chorus, making good use of both the ‘Robot’ vocals and Stipe’s ‘real’ voice. The shouts of “I’m an animal!” are now a lot more dynamic and thus it shifts the focus of the chorus from the backing vocals. However, the instrumentals have been left almost untouched, although it does feel a little quieter than before.

I prefer this version immensely to the “In Time” version, but there are still some flaws in the song. The opening few lines are still painful to listen to, although they vocals there have been toned down a bit. The song also lacks pace. The live version of “Animal” is almost electric because of its pace, yet this version is disappointingly slow.

If you like the song, I suggest that you consider buying this single. I personally have never considered buying a single before, but once I heard this remixed version, I was constantly thinking about buying this single, even though I already have the ‘original’ on disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Strange Kind of Animal (jump with me!), 22 Dec 2003
This review is from: Animal (Int'L Enhanced Maxi Single 42706) (Audio CD)
'What's the big deal? I'm an animal!' sings Michael Stipe in the chorus to this bizzare piece of hi-fi, Animal; perhaps the most (lyrically) incomprehensible song R.E.M. have written since 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite'. 'It's calling me to work it out!' what does it all mean? Who cares what it means? The quality of this song stems from it's elusiveness, coloured by the sonic soundscape, Peter Buck's slightly 60's sounding guitar line and the clever use of backing vocals by both Mike Mills and Michael Stipe. However, all these elements thrown together don't add up to much more than noise (albeit an interesting noise). Animal does not stand up to the billiance of IN TIME's first single, the frankly brilliant rock anthem, Bad Day, but is nontheless worth hearing simply for the fact that it makes for a unique (if weird) listening experience.
