More About the Author

'The Book of the Week. Even the most eager historians will find their knowledge challenged by this new book about the capital.' (Evening Standard)

'It's a book I think everyone should have.' (Robert Elms, BBC Radio London)

'The best possible start for anyone who wishes to get off the beaten track and under the skin of the hidden city that is modern-day London.' (Guardian)

'David Long's intriguing alphabetical survey - an attempt to impose order on chaos - lists hundreds of little courtyards and alleys, many almost forgotten among the banks and businesses.' (FT)

'This admirably structured and coherent book draws attention to the uncontrived diversity in London's architecture.' (Maxwell Hutchinson, President RIBA)

'The photographs are enigmatically stark, the text rich in anecdotes. Long brings a genuine pleasure to his subject and encourages his readers to look at London with an unceasing curiosity.' (The London Magazine)

'A quirkier look at the subject...plenty of new places here for even the most knowledgeable Londoner to explore.' (Museum of London)

'Quite an incredible wealth of endorsement at the highest level should be given to David Long's new book'. (BBC Radio London)

'David Long tells the story of how a humble transport system rapidly became one of the city's greatest icons.' (The Spectator)

Fascinated by those strange, semi-hidden corners of London most of us cease to notice because we walk by them so often, David Long has been a writer since leaving a first class university with a second class degree in the 1980s. Whilst a columnist for the Sunday People he created a popular weekly cartoon strip which appeared in the Times, and continues to write for a wide diversity of newspapers and magazines both in Britain and abroad. Many of his most popular and best reviewed books reflect his longstanding interest in the less well-known aspects of London, its architecture and eccentric inhabitants - subjects, he says, which simply never run dry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read 20 May 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Loved it!!! If you love animals and inspired by their heroics then you will love to read this book. Their dedication to their owners was truly amazing. Those owners that took courage to allow their 'pets' to be loaned to the War Service took herioism as well - I couldn't do that with my dog. Nice short chapters so easy to pick up and read in short intervals. Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Animals and birds in valient exploits 8 May 2013
By lacayo
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the wartime and indeed peacetime bravery of so many animals and pigeons. Some of their exploits were truly amazing. I had no idea that pigeons were carried in ships and aircraft and actually saved many human lives by flying with messages for many miles sometimes over water which they did not normally do. The wonderful tales of the bravery and devotion to duty of dogs and even horses, I found very emotional.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational history of animals in war 3 Nov 2012
By docrose
This book tells the astonishing stories of each of the animals awarded the Dickin Medal, the animals' equivalent of the Victoria Cross. The tales are drawn together through an exquisitely written narrative to form a comprehensive and profoundly moving account of animals in war. While the book is profoundly moving, the author writes without a trace of sentimentalism, preferring wisely to let the stories speak for themselves. The tales do not stand alone but are woven into a contextual fabric that offers the reader enough of the greater history to grasp the importance of the work done and the difficulties of the reality faced by the combatants. Hints of the greater historical and military knowledge of the author lie in surprising but pleasing detail, which add richness without distracting from the heroism of the animal protagonists. We meet Brian, a German Shepherd-Collie cross and qualified paratrooper, as he parachutes into the chaos and devastation of D-Day; Irma, a German Shepherd who together with a companion dog Psyche rescued 233 victims from the rubble of London; pigeons Royal Blue and Billy, both flying in aircraft that were forced to land in enemy territory, carried messages back across land and sea that enabled rescuers to locate the stricken crew; Able Seaman Simon, a raggedy ship's cat, contributed invaluable service hunting giant rats that were devastating the food supplies of the crew of HMS Amethyst, stricken on the Yangtze. Horses, too, play their part, keeping calm through bombs and fire, enabling their riders to bring control to situations of panic and chaos through the London Blitz. Read more ›
