Paying for a catalogue, 13 Sep 2007
This review is from: Animal Free Shopper (Paperback)
I bought this book because I do not eat animal-derived foods and try to avoid all other animal-derived products and I thought it might be useful. I was wrong.
It consists mainly of listings and advertisements from various worthy causes and/or commercial interests offering their products for sale, most of which seem to be chocolate products, toiletries, t-shirts and the usual irrelevant and uninteresting junk you get in those Christmas catalogues that charities inflict on us all every year. You know the sort of thing I mean: the organic fairtrade rattan backscratcher which looks as repulsive as it sounds. As soon as such junk mail arrives we put it straight in the bin for recycling. When you buy this book you are paying to read adverts for stuff like that. Hmm...
To be fair, it does contain some useful stuff (in a Boy Scout fascinating facts kind of way). For example, two pages list the meanings behind some of the E numbers so that when you are shopping for food you can work out from the list of addititives on a food label if the item is likely to contain hidden animal products. Two pages. Hmm... Is this what you buy a book for, to have two useful pages?
My advice is to save your money and just spend a bit of time doing some research about animal-free products using the internet. Off-set the carbon cost of using all that electricity with the money you save by not buying the book.
However, it still gets two stars because you can always fool yourself into thinking that buying this book means you are somehow supporting the Vegan Society and thus helping a good cause (although it would probably be better for all concerned if you just sent them the money as a straight forward donation).
Am I being cynical? No, I am just being British.
